I'm looking at a Nikon Prostaff P223 4x12 for my heavy barrel AR. Cost is around $200. Dicks Sporting goods has the same scope in
3x9 for $99.(black friday special) Question is should I spend the extra $100 and get the 4x12?

Assuming you mean 3-9 and 4-12 magnification, the difference between 9 and 12 and is negligible. Buy the 3-9.

I WAS buying 3x9 to save money. Now, I'm rotating to the 4x12 and taking the 3x9 back off, putting them back in their boxes, and storing them for possible future use.
I can fine tune the point of impact a bit better with the 12 instead of 9

I just recently replaced my cheap Tasco 3x9 with a Vortex 4x12 on my 10/22. I then put the Tasco on my older Savage MKII. I sighted them both in the same day. At 100 yards, the difference was not as much as I expected.

I'd call Allen at AA Optics in Indy. He can set you up with the best for your budget for your needs.

This is sure to produce some guffaws here. About 3 years ago myself and three friends each purchased a Center Point 4-16x40 scope at wally world for use on our 16" AR's. Our goal was simply to see how they would hold up. To date they're all still working just fine for roughly 3500 rounds each with no apparent change in accuracy. This may not hold true for a heavier recoiling rifle but for $60 our experience was worth the investment.

I won't argue that. The Tasco I mentioned above is probably 10 years old and cost about $30 new. It still works great.
