Hi All, I know true gen 3 night vision is outside the realm of many individuals.

However, there have been some advancements in digital space and one of them is the Aurora sport. This has been getting praises from some. And for a decent price during black friday for only 299. Maybe gen 2 performance with a 2 hour battery life.

There is a thread going on at arfcom

.... but at the price, even I am thinking about picking one up

Digital night vision has a LONG way to go. It's simply a regular digital camera in construction with some boosted gain.
I found a video of it in use:

From my understanding the Sionyx is fine for observations but not if you plan to use it to defend yourself

The issue is the latency as it would be difficult to aim with an IR laser, unless you were holding it very steady and the Target wasn’t moving

Digital night vision is a good entry level scope for night hunting. $500 for the scope and $60ish for a decent or light will easily get you 200 yards in pitch dark.

Digital NV has a ways to go, but it's still super interesting to pay attention to. Digital cameras with low-light modes or IR have been used as improvised NV for while now by various low-budget insurgents.

Here's a dude who hacked together a cheapo digital NV system with a webcam, smartphone, IR illuminator, and headset.

Perhaps not the most advanced thing ever, but it might seem like it when you're Tommy Taliban on a moonless night, sneaking up to knife some sleeping soldiers.
