Win231/HP-38 and Bullseye. Both are old standbys for the 45 acp cartridge. Lots of load data out there. I have been loading 4.6 to 4.9 grains of bullseye over a 200 grain LSWC. Chronograph says 835 - 900 fps depending on the charge. I have shot a lot of rounds loaded to 4.8 grain of bullseye with an OAL of 1.25". Recently I lucked into an extra 8 pound container of Winchester 231. So, I figured I would switch away from bullseye for a while. Do any of the INGO experts have a win231 to bullseye conversion for me? Looking for about 850 fps with a 200 grain LSWC (Bayou Bullet). I have loaded some at 5 grain and 5.4 grain because that is the setting for my Lee press. Constant rain has not allowed me to chronograph but both loads did function. I am thinking 5.2 - 5.4 grain of Win231 is going to get me where I want to go. Really just asking for others experience with 200 grain loads so that I can compare notes.

You are right with your 231 load. 5.2 to 5.4. You really should confirm with a load manual though, don't you think? The data or 231 is everywhere.

I suggest you load your bullet over the powder though. :):

ha good catch. Yes I will make sure to put the powder in first. Not hard to confirm a win231 load, I can find a manual that suggests anywhere from 4 - 6 grains.

I only use W231/HP-38 for all my pistol reloading. I reload a lot of 45acp since I shoot Single Stack in USPSA. I use coated 200gr SWC and 230gr RN from Black Bullets International. I make 180 power factor or 780fps with 5.0gr of W231/HP-38 with 230gr bullet at 1.250 OAL. I need tune down that load some. I make 168 power factor or 843fps with 5.0gr of W231/HP-38 with 200gr SWC at 1.225 OAL. So for 860fps you need probably 5.2gr of W231

Thanks Partyboy, that is the type of experience I am asking to share. Are you running a standard 16-18 lb recoil spring or lightning up to 14-15 lb with the 5.0 grain LSWC load? Looks like you seat a little deeper then I do but I doubt it would make much difference.

5.4 grains felt a little stout when I got a chance to try some a few weeks back. 5.0-5.2 might be where I need to be. Basically looking for a 165 PF load that is reliable. I shoot both a 5" and 4.25" gun so a little extra power is OK.

I run 14lb recoil springs in both my 45acp 1911's set up for USPSA. I've ran a 12lb variable spring before with 200gr SWC loads and the gun ran fine. Didn't beat up my frame or slide at all. I've ran OAL of 1.200, 1.225, & 1.250 with 45acp reloads. If you load longer it reduces the pressure in the case. But I can't tell a noticeable difference of recoil in the .025-.050 of length. Since I also shoot Limited division in USPSA I tend to like the 200gr SWC more since its a little bit snappy like my 40cal 180gr reloads.

I load a 230 gr RN from SNS over 4.8 gr W231. I believe the OAL is 1.200. Chrono's in just under 800 fps which is good for ~180 PF. Rounds were fired from a 5" 1911 that my buddy shoots in SS.

Bullseye is the classic .45 Auto powder and the classic powder for Bullseye competition.
    In my .45s, I can't beat 231/HP38, followed by AA2.
    My accuracy loads are:
RCBS #45-201-K 200gn L-SWC: 5.3-5.4gn 231/HP38 (This is a great cast bullet and is slightly more accurate than bullets from my H&G #68 mold)
    The old NBC 200gn L-SWC: 4.5-5.0gn 231/HP38
    Precision Delta swaged 200gn L-SWC: 4.7gn 231/HP38
    Penn 200gn L-SWC: 4.1-4.4gn 231/HP38
    Precision Bullets 200gn coated L-SWC:4.7-5.3gn 231/HP38
    Zero swaged 200gn L-SWC: 4.7-5.2gn 231/HP38
    Old Precision Bullets 185gn coated L-SWC: 4.1-4.4gn and 4.8-5.3gn 231/HP38
    Zero 185gn L-SWCHP: 5.2gn 231/HP38

I finally got a chance to chronograph some loads. I loaded 200 gr LSWC Bayou Bullets

    4.6 gr Bullseye - 832 FPS - PF 166
4.8 gr Bullseye - 891 FPS - PF 178 *this load was most consistent on the chronograph
    4.9 gr Bullseye - 900 FPS - PF 180

    5.0 gr HP-38 - 831 FPS - PF 166
    5.4 gr HP-38 - 873 FPS - PF 175
