Self Defense Ammo: XM556FBIT3 / XM556SBCT3

Per the list put out by Dr. Gary Roberts on best self defense ammo for various calibers, I have decided to go with XM556FBIT3 / XM556SBCT3 in my AR. From the information I have found, it seems this is the best load out there IMO. My problem is it is freeking expensive! The best I have found it is $1.20/round. Does this sound right? I don't want to buy in bulk or anything, the budget doesn't allow for $1200 for 1k of ammo right now. Any tips on where I might be able to find it cheaper? Anybody local have it? Is it usually at the 1500?

You aren't kidding. I was a little suprised when I started shopping for it.

I'll have to look into it. The listing says .233 and I guess 5.56mm is preferred for optimal expansion/fragmentation. I see the Gold Dot says it will expand down to a 10" barrel so it would probably be fine.

You might be able to find "better", but I seriously doubt you'll find better performance-for-dollar.

Another choice that has tested well, that is priced higher than Gold Dot but less than the two loads in OP:

This is my "Social" load when 8126N isn't available. Very accurate, even out of 11.5" bbl.

Ordered some of the Gold Dot last night. Even if it isn't "the best" it appears to be good stuff. I'll still probably be on the lookout for the other Federal ammo I listed because by all reports it is "the best" but at least now I have something better than ball ammo. I plan to start to use the AR as a HD weapon, so the switch was necessary.
