I just picked up a new 700 SPS Tactical in 308. I'm looking for load info to use as a starting point. For those of you that load for one of these, what loads have you found to be superior in this rifle? This is the 20", 12 twist model.

I would use the standard .308 load utilizing the 168 grain Sierra match king bullet as a starting point. If it won't shoot the standard load, at least out to 300 yards, the problem is with the rifle. Or the trigger puller.

It has the same length and twist as the LTR, no need to reinvent the wheel.
If buying off the shelf 168 or 175 FGMM

If rolling your own 168gr SMK or Hornady BTHP, if you have to try something different I've had great results going as low as 155gr with Lapua bullets though Hornady makes a 155gr BTHP if you wanna watch the budget

All great ideas. I've had great luck with 168 Berger vld target and imr 4064. A good trigger job will help you get to perfection

Thanks for the replies. I was intending to start playing with 168 gr bullets but was interested in powders and charges you all had found to work best. I realize each rifle even among identical models can be different, but was looking for a starting point to reduce the time required to find a good node for mine.

Also what are the heaviest bullet weights you have good success with?

My go to is the 168 amax over 42.5 grains of varget. Ive shot it in a lot of 308's, and it may not shoot the best in all rifles, but it shoots good in everything I've ran it throufh.

I too have a 700 tactical 308. I've had good luck with 168gr A-max over 43.5 grains of Varget. I've also had pretty good accuracy with 178gr A-max over 40 grains of XBR-8208.
Both of those powders work well in the 308.

Really good powders for 308: XBR8208, Varget, and IMR 4064. I'm fairly certain that federal loads their GMM 308's with IMR4064. Start at the bottom and do a ladder test for each powder

I too load the 168 AMAX with 44.0 gr. of Varget with CCI BR2 primers in Hornady match brass. It's my go to load for my Howa 20" heavy barrel. It's a one hole five shot group recipe in my Howa.

When my son was younger, he was a little recoil sensitive, so the load in his 308 is with the 155gr A-Max bullets. With a suitable charge of H4895, he shoots in the 4's with it.

Asking online for what powder AND charge weight others use is basically pointless, because you ARE going to start low and work your way up, to see what is SAFE and accurate in YOUR rifle...right? :dunno:

168gr Amax over 44.4gr Varget in Hornady Match brass with a WLR primer duplicates the Hornady 168gr TAP "red box" load and in my experience was sub-MOA in a 20" 1:10 AAC-SD and a 26" 1:12 SPS Varmint; you might expect 2575fps from this load through a 20" factory 700 barrel once you have 100 or so rounds down it.

Same bullet with 42.4gr 8208XBR will be 30ish fps slower.

If you want to 'step on it' for velocity, both loads above can be worked one node up.

Plenty of 168gr Amax out in circulation right now, but the 168gr ELD-M is a significant step up in BC and shoots almost identically.
