I'm relatively new to reloading and have only loaded 45 ACP. I would like to load 10 mm Auto...any recommendation for powder/bullet combinations (including powder choice and grains, bullet weight and type, and OAL). My goal is to produce an accurate, moderately powered, and reasonably priced round for practice and an occasional steel shoot. Thanks in advance.

For absolute full house 10mm, I think 800-X will still give the best numbers but doesn’t meter for crap and you will want to drop powder individually for each. I love AA#9 for heavy stuff and for more midrange I’ve gotten good use out of Blue Dot And Longshot.

What bullet weight are you shooting?

If you do go 800x make sure your trickle the exact amount if you go full power 10mm loads. As said by Mag58 its very bad metering.

I've worked up several loads using 800x if you search this forum you can read about them. 155gr XTP and 200gr WFNGC bullets. Always work up your loads 0.2gr maximum per test groups i usually load 10 rds of several different powder weights and test. That way you only havea few to pull if needed.
What shoots in my Glock 20SF may be to much for your handgun. Or maybe you can get more out of it. Just work up test look for pressure signs and have fun.

For something mild, I used about 5.2gr of Win231/HP-38 (same powder) with a 180gr bullet. Mild shooter, in the realm of 40 S&W.

COAL is dependent on the gun. The 1911 I was loading for will be different than say, a Glock.

800-x not only meters terribly, but it is somewhat unstable and can you in trouble with little warning. I'd recommend avoiding it and going with AA#9, Longshot, or (if you don't mind fireballs) Blue Dot.

I've settled on BE-86 for just about everything pistol, so I'd use that and just eat the small speed penalty. It has very little flash, burns clean once you get above the bottom charges, and has a very good overall density for autoloading pistol calibers. Meters SUPERBLY.

near Bedford on a whole lot of land.
800-x is fine in 10mm and I can get squueze about 50fps more out of the 6” bbl over the highest weight PowerPistol I’ll throw, but each charge is hand weighed because the metering is just too uneven which is one reason a lot of people consider its pressure curve to be spiky.

I reload for a Glock with stormlake 10mm conversion barrel so I use a lee bulge buster to finish all my reloads.

I enjoy shooting Missouri Bullets 140 & 170gr cast using titegroup for a fantastic fun accurate round.

Shoot sig 180gr factory to get my cases cause vel. about 1250 fps is accurate.

I load 180gr XTP using blue dot.
Avoid 800X because lees data is wrong & compressed & did not function well.

I settled on a Armscor 180gr FMJ RN bullet over 12.9gr of Accurate No. 9 averaging 1,238 fps with a ES of 22.88 and SD of 9.13 fired from a Dan Wesson Bruin. Very accurate load and only moderate recoil.

Now for a full house butt kicker i used a Speer TMJ 155gr bullet over 15.0gr of Accurate No. 9 averaging 1,416fps with a ES of 31.36 and SD of 12.9 fired from the same gun. Recoil was definitely there and very noticeable but accurate.

Going to have to try some AA#9 in the future.

Currently using Longshot for 180gr. JHP. I also have a lot of 2400 that I want to try as well. Both meter well in the auto drum. For target stuff I am trying to use up my stash of Winchester Super Field. Once it is gone I am thinking of switching to CFE Pistol. It seems to run good velocity in quite a few calibers.

Reloading manuals are your friend. Read and study them. Don't use what everybody throws out there on the internet. How are you going to learn what's best for you without working up you own data?

    +1

Most have online manuals now days. I have used these extensively:
Hodgdon's which covers Winchester and IMR powders
Western Powder which covers Ramsot, Accurate, and Norma powders
    Alliant (Hercules)
Nosler - has data for several brands of powders for their bullets

Thanks everybody...as it turns out, a good friend shot a lot of 10mm and gave me the formula below (which I tried and liked in my Glock 20)...he used the ammo for shooting IPSC, so I probably want a little more velocity! Just borrowed a chronometer and gonna go see what I get!

    10 mm180 gr FMJ-TCVV N3406.2 grains
    range (6.1-6.9)
    COAL 1.256

FYI: I finally loaded my 10mm with the following formula: 180gr FMJ-TC, Vihtavuori N340, 6.4 grains, COAL 1.256. It feeds reliably and shoots accurately out of my Glock 20...I am very happy.
My next adventure will be to load some 200gr polymer coated hard-cast RNFP for self-protection from critters in Montana. Anyone have experience with this load? Do Glocks do well with polymer coated bullets? Thanks.
