This is great news on the scientific front. The ability to modify genes just took a huge leap forward. We could be looking at cures for diseases such as Huntingtons and even HIV in the years to come because of this new therapy. We could even be looking at eradicating some diseases in vitro. Phenomenal! Now all we have to do is keep the know nothings in their cages while we look to the future.

We've been hearing about medical breakthroughs that will cure just about every disease for the last 50 years and yet we still can't figure out how to stop the common cold. The research is interesting, though, but what floored me about the article was that it took 10 years for the developer of the PCR technique 10 years to be awarded a Nobel for his work.

Personally, I think we will always be "searching" for a cure for a lot of diseases because the big money is in treating the disease, not curing it.

Couple videos from Kurzgesagt on the subject of CRISPR. Including one today about it's potential to rid the world of diseases like Malaria.

And the older one talking more generally about CRISPR

Three years since this thread was started. Are we any closer to curing some of the more common deadly diseases? Not really. The cost of research is astronomical, and our National Institutes of Health is not passing out enough money to fund the needed research. There are more important things to spend money on, like obama phones and other give-aways.

It's a shame that he and others who posted interesting and timely topics like those left INGO voluntarily. Their humility, willingness to listen and level headed analysis is sorely missed.
