Police action shooting on city?s near northwest side, no officers injured | Fox 59 News ? fox59.com

Indianapolis Metropolitan SWAT officers were involved in a police action shooting early Tuesday morning. No officers were injured.
The officers were already patrolling the area near Harding and Pruitt streets on the near northwest side when they heard shots fired. They saw a man firing shots at a car with four people inside, said Lt. Chris Bailey.

“Our officers were in the right place at the right time,” he said.

Seems like more officers would equal more opportunities to be in the right place at the right time.

Multiple cases of someone going into an area to shoot at stuff & people, very much like tactics groups use when displaying their control or intent to control an area, similar to protection rackets..
"pay us or we burn down your store" .. could be " allow us control of the drug trade in this area or we shoot up the place"..

It could also be a bad batch of Prozac..

Oh, no. It's much better to cut back on cops on the street and give raises to the office staff.

    Just like Ballard did!

Ballard says more sidewalks, parks, roads and bridges (infrastructure) will curb crime. More cops are not needed.

From the viewpoint of a police officer with skin in the game, so to speak, this is a failure in leadership and a shining example of the mayor burying his head in the sand.

From the viewpoint of a tax payer in Marion County, this is unacceptable for the mayor to ignore the people. You do not hear us citizens calling for more bike lanes, parks or cricket fields. You hear us constantly clamoring for safer neighborhoods. Believing that parks and bike lanes are even remotely related to crime is completely out of touch with reality.

I dont know if its a gang problem. The ass clowns that I deal with are generally not gang affiliated. I do believe that there are several small-time gangs operating in Indy who definitely have a hand in the crime stats. That said its not an out and out war over turf. Its more like "you talked to my girl ao you gotta be killed now" or some other nonsense. The killings are not "business" as they once were, but now are "just because". The culture supports shooting and killing as a way to solve relatively minor problems, and this is the root of the problem.

What percentage of impd man hours is being used for the ticket brigade? The shoulder of 465 during business hours isn't the right place and right time to stop violent crime.

I grew up in suburbia, south Indy...After working security at the Marathon gas station on 29th and MLK and the St. Vincent DePauw facility on E.30 Th I quickly developed the sense that it was a cultural acceptance issue rather than a gang issue, but have not really been able to confirm that. I fear that only change from within the community and culture will positively affect the outcome of people living in those neighborhoods. I fear that because it is the hardest route, but also the most necessary.

I drive from the northwest side to the southeast side almost daily and I use 465. I have never seen a non-ISP police car being the "ticket brigade" on the interstate. Our traffic branch has only a handful of officers and some reserves.

THIS! As one who has been popped by these gentlemen, I can tell you they arent IMPD. They are ISP.

The only IMPD I have witnessed on the shoulder were typically in plain clothes scolding a driver for something. (dunno whether a ticket was written, but each time the IMPD officer was visibly annoyed)

We generally don't run around on the interstate much unless we are going somewhere out of our patrol zone like downtown, juvenile, training etc... the Troopers are tasked with the interstates and we have no problem letting them have it.

Aww, c'mon... you haven't even given the cricket pitch a chance!

I see people complaining about cops writing tickets all the time. I have a theory that those people only want the police to enforce the laws they don't break.

Not much. Most of the "ticket brigade" is done on federally funded overtime that must be used for traffic safety at high crash locations. Traffic hasn't had a transfer process for about 8-9 years and have lost a lot of officers to attrition and expanding job description (VIN checks, high crime area interdiction, etc, race day escorts, etc.)

Whoever you're seeing on the Interstate is most likely ISP.

BBI, Frank, VUPD, Denny... any comment about gang activity in Indianapolis being on the rise this year more so than in the past?

A lot of the shootings are gang related, or at least the people being shot are known gang members. There is also some organized robbery activity that is gang related.

That said, I don't really feel qualified to say if the gang related activity is up or down this year.
