I've decided to start planning (saving) to gift myself a .45 next April 2015 when I turn 45. I'm thinking something classic like a 1911. I wouldn't turn down a Vector from any of you philanthropists out there, but I'm thinking something classic and within financial range of owning.

    Input?

Oh boy. I of course lean towards any 1911 offered from Springfield but so many other decent pieces available.

Do you have a budget figure in mind??

Have you looked into Dan Wesson pistols? Drool-worthy...

Any idea what your budget will be? HUGE difference between a $1000 gun and a $3000 gun...

That's why I decided to start thinking about it now. If I put back $250 each month for 5 months, that's $1500. Putting more than that back is a definite no, so it looks like $1200-1500.

That's a good chunk of change there. That'll buy a nice 1911 IMHO.

I think I put about $1100 in my Dan Wesson, and thereabouts in a Rem R1 with a threaded barrel. Couple of Paras, but they're P12s, so they kinda stretch the definition of a 1911. They are starting to get some good reviews on their actual 1911s, though. Got my son a Sig P227 before most of the ISP, and the 14rd mags finally showed up last week.

In my research, the Ruger 1911 is the best bang for the buck. Not overly expensive and well made, and if there IS a problem, Ruger will step up without fuss. One user here had collectible special edition models replaced due to rust issues and Ruger even went so far as to have the replacements re-certified by the 3rd party.

Now if you arent really afraid of price... Sky's the limit.

disclaimer: I am NOT a 1911 guru. I leave that up to ChurchMouse and others.

For something totally different and more in the budget territory, I ended up with an M&P 45c for my first .45 (even though I was 47 when I got it last month). I thought about a 1911, but I like striker fired guns and wanted to go with something more familiar first. They're great guns, have the same 8 round capacity that a lot of 1911's do (stock) and are great shooters. I paid under $500 for mine new, with shipping and FFL included.

You seem to have a definite taste for the odd colored guns.

Skip the mustard yellow. Stainless is your friend.

Haha, you dislike my VTAC? The main thing about this one is that it's USMC issue and yes I do happen to like the tan usually. I guess part of the reason is that it's closer to skin color and not as noticeable as a black gun.
I prefer striker fired as well, but I think I'm wanting a 1911 style for more of a commemorative shooter than a utilitarian shooter.
