This article has a way to look up police departments by name and see what excess military equipment they have picked up. I'm so disappointed -- my home county didn't grab a single MRAP, just a couple rifles.

    Intersting factoid:
Since 2006, police in Winthrop Harbor, Ill., a village of 6,700 along the shore of Lake Michigan, has received 10 helicopters, one mine-resistant armored vehicle and two Humvees, and other equipment, worth more than $6.5 million.

10 helicopters. I'd like to see where they are now.

Also note that if a federal agency within the state received excess mil stuff, it is apparently listed within the state. I didn't see any in Indiana (yet), but for Texas it also includes a bunch of Federal agencies like the INS and the Border Patrol. And the IRS in El Paso, which got a night vision sight. A night vision sight?? for the IRS??

    Enjoy.

Unless that list is from the 50's it's not correct for my department. Ooooor someone is skimming and hiding. 60 pairs of cold weather gear. Unless Santa is delivering it to us soon.

Don't bet on that list being wholly correct.

I looked up one department that I know for certain what equipment they've gotten from that program. Their list is missing at least one rifle..and probably one more.

look at the THPD vs. Vigo County.

like 9 trucks, an MRAP, 63 5.56 rifles, 23 M14 rifles, and lots of misc.

Here is where those helicopters ended up. A worthy cause, in my opinion. AIR-ONE Emergency Response Coalition

Ya know... I'm getting so sick of everyone being up in arms over these departments that receive this surplus equipment. I would rather see it put to local use than given away to a foreign country or just cut up for scrap. Our tax dollars have already paid for it. While the stuff may not be the best fit for its new missions, it may be better than what a lot of these counties have at their disposal. I know for a fact that a bulk of the equipment that Pulaski County has received has been purposed disaster response and relief and is available to all of northern Indiana for use. I also know that it was deployed to Henryville after the tornados hit, and to New York, New Jersey, and Maryland for Superstorm Sandy. There isn't a huge tax base in Pulaski County to provide everything they need. Those trucks get used by the highway department, the local fire departments as brush trucks, by the EMA, and several other local and county departments. Believe me, it's not being stockpiled by the police to use against their citizens. Sheriff Gayer may have made a knucklehead statement about the "war zone" in America, but he is a standup guy that looks out for his people. Don't forget that everyone here was praising him when he made public statements speaking out against the idea of unconstitutional gun laws.

As far as the helicopters go in Winthrop Harbor, it appears that they serve a rather large area for several different purposes. It is great that they have them along Lake Michigan. It takes an awful long time for a boat to reach another vessel that is 5 or more miles offshore in the event of an emergency. A helicopter cuts minutes off of that time. That what Lake County uses their Huey for, and it has saved many lives. It's not all being used against us.

If the Winthrop PD did in fact use pass those helicopters along for an actual good use by rescue agencies, then good on them. My VFD uses several military vehicles for fire suppression altho an MRAP would make a lousy brush truck. (We actually use civilian vehicles that the military bought for military use and then we bought them back at reduced price for civilian use).

But the various governments, state and local, brought suspicion on themselves with this the same way they have for so many other things, by clamming up about what it was really doing with this program, floating bogus reasons why it was "sensitive", and forcing people to file FOIAs, sue, write caustic articles in the paper and whatnot. Then dumping the info in a totally unresponsive and unexplained form.

That list is hardly accurate. I posted a thread a couple months ago that had a more detailed account of what went where... let me find it.

Found it. This seems much more complete: http://www.shtfplan.com/militarization-by-county-via-the-law-enforcement-support-office

That would be for Madison and Hanover from what I can tell. The other site is sorted by each individual town/city, but didn't have the same number of items as listed above.
