Member of one of best Hip-Hop groups ever. In an area where everyone was rapping about being gangsters, dopes, and b******, he and the rest of his group rapped about having fun, being smart, and non-violence. Huge influence on me.

"Malik was our loving husband, father, brother and friend," his family said in a statement. "We love him dearly. How he impacted all our lives will never be forgotten. His love for music and sports was only surpassed by his love of God and family."

    RIP.
Not familiar with him or the group, but that's probably a good thing. We only hear about the bad ones.

They were HUGE in the 90s. They've been in a bunch of soundtracks (MIB, Boiler Room, Step Brothers), you know their music, you just didn't know it was them.

Probably true. I think you know I don't have real broad horizons. I'm mellowing though. :)

Sorry for the loss Kut...When I was in the mortgage business I made a comment negative towards rap and a couple of younger guys in the office said that I was judging all rap through a narrow window...He then introduced me TCQ, The Roots, and a couple of guys he went to Western Kentucky with called Nappy Roots...

I listened to what he had burned for me and said "I stand corrected..."

Hip hop is a huge musical category. It's beginnings were quite innocent. Then came the explosion of NWA. Kids in the burbs who had no idea what ghetto crime life was about, turned a niche, into a genre. It was literally a movie for the ears. I understand the attraction. And of course, after that, there came the copycats looking for a payday. Eventually in the late 80s and through the 90s there was a pushback, led by acts such as Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, De La Soul, the Fugees, and others. Rather than harp on crime, money, and drugs they were all about self empowerment, political activism, and simply having fun.
Hip hop is like wine. If someone says they don't care for it, they simply haven't tasted enough.

I found these guys from the music they did for the TV show Justified....I have become a fan...I like the blend of Hillbilly and Hip Hop they do...At first I thought it was just trying to be gimmicky but I really enjoy it...Their passion is real and they seem genuine....

He died much too early, but his addiction to sugar and a sedentary lifestyle was his demise. Like many men, he cared for others more than himself and now he leaves those who loved him (not just us who know of him), to mourn. I know too many people with diabetes who insist on eating the things their doctor prohibits. A piece of cake isn't worth it!

Agreed, I listened to a ton of it as a teen in the 80's growing up in North FL. It was interesting, I'd switch from stuff like Lynyrd Skynyrd one moment, to NWA, then back to Van Halen. The cool thing about the hip hop stuff was there was always something new coming in every day at the record store. Still get on a kick every once in a while and tune it in on Pandora. As you said, it really was a movie or even an audio book for the ears. I liked a lot of different stuff including some of the harder stuff. Watched Straight Outta Compton the other day so, just had to listen to my NWA Pandora station while mowing the grass today...

First may he rest in peace and my sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I've listened to a variety, and I can say I don't like hip hop. I can appreciate the talent, just don't like it. Same with new wave jazz. And I listen to and enjoy a very wide variety of music, everything from 40's and 50's to classical to acid rock. Hip hop just doesn't do it for me. About the closest would be Kid Rock, is he hip hop? If so then I'll agree with you.

Get rid of the lyrics and I'd listen to it all day long.
