'We Were Soldiers' hero passes; the celebrated life story of a soldier, a leader, a father

Retired Lt. Gen. Hal Moore passed away late Friday night. He would have turned 95 years old on Monday, and the Army hero known for saving most of his men and surviving a fierce standoff despite being outnumbered 10-to-1 in the first major battle of the Vietnam War proved to be a ferocious fighter to the very end.

This was the man portrayed by Mel Gibson in "We Were Soldiers".

All things are inevitable, but that doesn't make it any less sad when a great leader and hero like Lt. Gen. Moore gives up the battle for good.
For anyone who hasn't seen the movie, please do yourself a favor and watch it.
It's not the easiest movie to watch, but it's important to see just how savage the Battle of la Drang really was.
There is some confusion on his Wikipedia page, which claims that he was promoted to Brigadier General, then Major General, then Lieutenant General.
It should be obvious that going from Major General to Lieutenant General wouldn't be a promotion, but a demotion, so it's a dead certainty that the Wikipedia page needs a correction indicating that he went from Brig. Gen. to Lt. Gen. and that was it.

RIP. The only thing really bad about the "movie" was I had taped and watched over and over a documentary on TV years before the movie came out called "We were young and brave." Or something like that, still have the tape and many of the soldiers including Hal Moore were in it and told their story, and then they went back to Vietnam to the battle field…..it was very overwhelming for them. I found this much better than the movie that seemed like they had charged and won the battle in the end….not sure why they did that. They got into a meat grinder for sure.
