I wanted ice cream. I went to the store. I was confronted by a plethora of choices, but one stood out:

    Velvet's Homemade Vanilla

Ooh! I I like homemade vanilla ice cream.

Then I check the ingredients... well, at least there's actual vanilla extract... but ... guar gum? Turmeric? Buttermilk powder?

    no! no! no! :xmad:

No homemade ice cream ever had these things!

Besides, the fact that is was made in a factory negates any possibility of being homemade by definition!

    What is wrong with America?!

My wife used to work at a bakery in a grocery store that sold "fresh baked pies." Yes, they were fresh baked, just after they were taken out of the frozen foods case and popped in the oven, all at a huge markup. People mistake "fresh baked" for "home made."

I car hopped at the local rootbeer stand for a while. They touted their "homemade rootbeer" and people raved about it. Essentially it was gallon jugs of concentrate ordered from the food supply place mixed with 50 pound bags (yes 50 POUND bags) of sugar and water. I couldn't even drink that stuff....mixed with the nasty tap water they had there.

These are not the home mades that you are looking for...

I doubt there are too many places in the US where food that is actually "home made" can be legally sold in a store. Unless the homemaker's kitchen is industrial strength with industrial hygiene rules and so forth. Which kinda negates the whole concept.

Homemade at my house means hand cranked in a 25 year old White Mountain ice cream churn. I did say hand cranked, did I not?

We had one that was passed down through the family. Best ice cream ever. I spent my fair share at the crank.

Have no idea where it ended up.

Speaking of crank, it's about the only thing that is homemade anymore, or Walmart bathroom made, or cheap seedy motel made, or trunk of your car made...

Same here. Dad would buy a big block of ice and he would chip it with an ice pick and add it to the bucket (with rock salt) while I worked the crank. We usually made strawberry ice cream.
