Unfortunately big cities everywhere attract people who will vote for Democrats. In Texas there were still quite a few Republicans at the local city level in certain offices, like sheriff and judge, DA -- until the last general election. Because of the intensity of the presidential race, the Dems went straight -ticket and Republicans down-ticket that would have usually been elected or reelected got clobbered. The large majority of Texas went with Trump, but the big cities went Hillary.
