Today marks the 73rd Anniversary of operation Overlord, or D-Day, the landing of Allied forces on the beaches of Normandy on June 6th 1944.

This date marks the begining of the liberation of France and the rest of Europe, and ultimately the defeat of Nazi Germany.

Over 10,000 Allied soldiers died on that day alone.

    Lest we forget. :patriot:

I'm planning a trip to the beach and to a local cemetery.

Hopefully the heavy rain will stop and I will be able to take some pictures to share on INGO.

I visited one of my local cemetery where they have a few WW2 graves, in particular one of an unknown soldier, and placed some flowers there.

It was very windy today. That's why you have fallen branches on the ground. All the flowers pots were knocked over when I got there.

Its a shame that the "Greatest Generation" has not even had honorable mention in the biased society of today. I always get up an hour earlier just to go to a local cemetery just to show a silent respect for those that gave all. ~~"One Man's Opinion!"

On my way back from the cemetery I stopped by the beach.

After a closer look at the different flags displayed there I noticed one quite important was missing.Especially on that day.

They had a total of six flags ...

The flag of France, Normandy, the European Union, the UK, Canada and ... Germany.

It seemed odd that they chose to display the flags of major WW2 Allied without adding an American flag.

That mistake had to be fixed.
Good thing I always carry a 3 feet by 5 feet American flag as part of my EDC, with the 6 feet long pole to go with it! ;)

Huge thanks to Chris, aka Dirtebiker, for the flag. :patriot:

It was not easy making it fly with a 30 mph wind but I managed to do it.
Since it was the high tide I couldn't plant the pole directly into the sand and with that much wind I had to find something heavy to secure it.

A convenient fallen bunker provided a sturdy stand.
And what a better image than the star sprangled banner flying on top of a destroyed German bunker on D-Day?

Thank you for doing this. My Great Grandpa Doss was part of the second wave with the 4th infantry division this day 73 years ago. He would never be the same. I know some of his friends are laid to rest there as well as men he was incharge. His mission was to knock out tanks and other vehicle that he came into contact with. He passed away in Dec. 24 2001. I may only known him for 12 years but I was very close to him I always miss him.
