It's not deception... Just "nicknames" for the boards.
I hope they win the dumb lawsuit. I hate the way they've labeled lumber.
My grandfather was a lumber inspector in Glasgow Ky. I guess I grew up thinking of lumber in specific terms.

Next up... lawsuits against Winchester and other ammo manufacturers.

Despite its name, the caliber of the .38 Special cartridge is actually .357–.358 inches (36 caliber/9.0678 mm), with the ".38" referring to the approximate diameter of the loaded brass case.

Only in Merica! That's why they have to put "Caution Hot" on hot coffee cups at McDonalds.

Karma had a way of weeding out stupid people, now because of the nany society we live in they are breeding like rats.

Holy crap they were deceived and the evil retailers profit billions of dollars on these lies. This isn't like buying a gallon of gas and only getting .9 gallons. A 4x4 that is 3.5 x 3.5 is still going to hold your fence and mail box up just fine.

    "Not everybody knows..."
    Then maybe they should research.

So, if you decide you want to do a project, and not pay an expert, but then not even do the research......

    Ugh.

Must be real hard, you know, in the internet age, to look stuff up.

    Took all of .35 seconds.

Lumber manufacturers typically cut a tree into dimensional lumber very shortly after the tree is felled. Then, the newly-sawn (but soaking wet) lumber is kiln-dried until it reaches the desired moisture level. As lumber dries, it shrinks (as the moisture in the wood is reduced, the wood cells shrink, particularly across the grain). While the 8' length won't change much as the wood dries, the 2" width and 4" height (cross-section of the grain) will shrink considerably.

The lumber industry has been using "dimensional" sizes since, what, the 1920's or so? And folks STILL have no clue?

Besides, you can get a true 4" by 4" post if you REALLY want it. Just go to a honest-to-goodness lumber yard and ask.

Yep, because one Chicago moron doesn't know the correct dimensions, we have to drag the whole country down to his "lowest common denominator" level. The "Dumbing Down of America" is still alive and well.

IF I'm not mistaken aren't these undersized boards actually labeled with the correct dimensions?
Maybe its a reaction to this, but Lowes does list the actual sizes in fine print on the shelf tags. I noticed it the last time I was buying some lumber. it was in the last couple weeks.
Loser pays will solve a lot of this BS.

    Absolutely.
