    Ill Annoys (IL) For now
Haven't been on this forum for a while. My wife and I have been roaming around the, "City Data", forums trying to find somewhere to relocate to from Matteson, IL, (Cook County about 35 miles south of Chicago - need I say more?) We've looked seriously at Sheridan Wyoming, But my wife has some lung damage and may not have an easy time adjusting to a higher altitude. So, we finally looked again right next door at Indiana and may have found somewhere good.
We're mainly looking for a, "Gun friendly", area with a nice Senior Center and decent transportation, (Buses), to get around town. From what we've discovered so far, Greensburg seems like a good possibility. How is the senior apartment situation there? I would also like to know of any Veteran's Health care facilities, (Or Civilian facilities that have an, "Agreement", with the VA), and if there are any Veteran's Organizations. (I'm a former Navy Hospital Corpsman.) I have written to Mike Baumgartner at Decatur County Veterans' Services last month, but have not received any reply.

We want to plan a visit, and will probably end up driving there. We were not able to find any bus or train transportation to Greensburg. Any information at all on any Greensburg subject, (Or any other Indiana suggestions), would be greatly appreciated! (Also have a HAM Radio Tech License for a bit over a year.)

    Thanks in advance!

I've heard a few good things about greensburg, one of my coworkers son's live there. I know he loves it there for the piece and quiet. But beyond that I've not heard anything on your other questions.

Hello. You might look into Batesville In 47006. It is very gun friendly, in fact we have our own gun range that is only $30 a year to join. We have very affordable senior housing that have buses to the local store. It is a great little town with a lot to offer. SAM ( Mary)

Love the sound of peace and quiet! :) It's good to know there still are places that have it! Thank you.

Thank you for the fast reply! The range sounds like a big Plus! One important thing I forgot to mention in my first post, we would really like to have a WalMart and Aldi available - difficult to make ends meet without them. Even though batesville is only 15 miles from Greensburg, we don't own a car - would have to rent one, so minimal bus service would be great!

Do not overlook Northwest Indiana, I can highly recommend Valparaiso, Indiana. There is an Aldi and Walmart in the same town. They have Blythe's Sport Shop (which has an indoor range), Copper Custom, and there is a good amount of gun shops in Lake County as well. I am just not too sure on bus service. It is a really nice and quiet town.

Thank you for the good information and recommendation! We checked out Valparaiso, and it looks like a nice town. They do have regular bus service with senior discount. :) However, they seem just a bit too close to Chicago and Cook County, (the places we're trying to get away from :(). The Chicago influence shows up in the voting history - a little too much blue in the graphics. Just another thing we're trying to escape. We really do appreciate your suggestions and information!

I would recommend Muncie (47304). Affordable housing (39% National Value), good bus Service (MITS - Muncie Indiana Transit System), Two Walmarts, Two Aldis, and a Ruler Food. Only downside is it is very blue, but it is a bunch of old Union Dems. Voted for Bernie in the primary and Trump in the general. You won't have a Republican representative in the State House or Senate, but it doesn't really matter as they are in the minority and get voted against. The only black mark here is our city government and school system, but you don't have to worry about schools and you can usually ignore the city, especially since you don't drive and hit all the potholes.

Give us a look, and I can help fill in the details.

I believe you'll find public transport severely lacking in Greensburg. I do bet, however, that there's a "senior bus" that one can take.

See if you can poke around on the Decatur County, Indiana website for senior services and see if they have transportation you can sign up for.

I can attest to Batesville being sound, my BIL lives in Brookville and we're in the area fairly often. Also have you check out Madison? We have several senior options, public transport for them, wal mart, aldi's, you name it. A few taxi services also if the transport doesn't meed the needs. Madison is around 35 minutes south of Greensburg on the ohio river, we have an American Legion and VFW for sure.

Shelbyville has many of the things your looking for , plus a casino and horse track . also close to Indianapolis for those things that rural areas don't seem to have .

Thank you for your reply! We did find that Greensburg has, "Catch A Ride", bus service. Seniors fare is .75 for 5 miles or less. Sounds like it would work. :)

We appreciate your reply! We have checked out Madison, and decided it's crime rate is a bit too high. We're really wanting somewhere with a CR as low as possible. Thank you for your input! We need all the suggestions we can get.

Why don't you like to live in Carmel?

    Sorry, I'm kidding.

Public transportation is lacking around smaller towns. Bigger towns are few and far between, They are normally run by the Dems, not gun friendly.

Thank you! That's what we're finding out. Even where we are now, bus service in our area has been cut to Zero. We don't have a car and have to use the township bus to get anywhere like groceries and such and the fare is $3 per person each way within the township, but they do pick us up at our house.
