So apparently they are orchids. Plant has to be 3-5 years old. Harvest 9 months after germination. Then dry for a month. Woah.
Yes. Lots of work. For years. Flowers only last a day and need hand pollinated. Plant needs moved around constantly. Must have a greenhouse.

12 bucks seems like a bargain after reading about this.

Oh yeah...and if Vanillin is expensive, look up saffron.

We buy huge vanilla bottles in Mexico. So much cheaper. It's where the plants thrive

Yeah, I've seen saffron prices. Wanted to find out how to sell it :):

like saffron? Check out blue horseshoe crab blood.

    $60,000/gallon

I have saffron crocuses growing around in my front yard. when I'm able to get myself down on the ground and back up, I can crawl around and pick about $100 worth of the stuff in a few minutes. The bulbs were actually pretty cheap on ebay.

I think I normally pay around $11 for vanilla beans, but I am pretty sure there are two in the bottle. I love making my own vanilla for baking.
