Well, I wasn't going to post this.
But, it doesn't look good for the crew of 44.
The submarine's last contact was 9 days ago. Only so much oxygen can be stored, and you have to worry about carbon dioxide.

While they are not Americans, they are "brothers of the 'phin" (and a sister of the 'phin). ('phin is short for dolphin).
They've fought a war against nature.
Sometimes, nature likes to remind man she still has power over man.

When ships sink, there is often wreckage, or a SOS sent out. Many times other ships may witness the event.
When a sub goes down, there is no signal, there are no witnesses. And very rarely are there survivors.
This is why a lost sub (and it's crew) is considered to be on "Eternal Patrol".
They haven't found this sub yet, but it would take a miracle at this point.

Down To The Sea In Ships
    Charles W. Mitchell
I have gone down to the sea
    I have worked the ships
I have seen the glory of the Lord
    I have quenched my lips.

I have lived the life of a Mariner
The world can be a united neighborhood
I have defied the will of Lucifer
Working the ships in an adventuresome good.

I have been to many mountains
I have been through the valley of the shadow of death
I have sailed the seven seas
The lifeline of ships is a manifestation of
    "Open Sesame" and God's breath.

I have gone down to the sea
    I did see the sky
    The Lord is my Captain
    The Lord does glorify.

As ships that pass in the night
    I have met the twain
I did go down to the sea
I would do it yet again.

"From The Klaxon, Submarine Force Library and Museum Association, Groton, CT"

Born in the shops of the devil.
Designed by the brains of a fiend,
Filled with acid and crude oil,
    And christened: a submarine.

The poets sound in their ditties,
    Of battleships spic and span.
But never a word in their columns,
Do you see of a submarine.

So I'll endeavor to depict our story,
    In a very laconic way,
So please have patience and listen
Until I have finished my say.

We eat where ere we can find it,
And sleep hanging up on hooks,
Conditions under which we are existing ,
    are never published in books.

Life on these boats is obnoxious,
and that is using mild terms,
We are never bothered with sickness
Because there is no room for germs

We are never troubled with cooties,
There are things even roaches can't stand,
    And any self-respecting rodent ,
Quick as possible beats it for land.

And that one dollar we get per dive,
We receive to submerge out of sight,
Is often earned more than double,
    By charging batteries at night.

    At that extra compensation,
We received on boats like these
We really never get at all ,
    It's spent on dungarees.

Machinists get soaked in crude oil,
    Electricians in H2S04,
    Gunners mates in their 600W
    And torpedo slush galore.

When we come into the navy yard,
We are looked upon as a disgrace,
As they make out new regulations,
    To suit our particular case.

    Now all you battleship sailors,
When you are feeling disgruntled and mean,
Just pack your bag and hammock,
    And go to a submarine

I had heard that there were unanswerable calls from the sub on a satellite phone early in the search. No contact since then though is not a good omen. So, here's to the dead already and hurrah for the next man to die.

Looks like a fairly small sub by American standards and I've always heard that when it comes to ships and subs the bigger the better. I was never in the Navy but my brother was. He worked on a sub tender for a few years. He always told me it takes a special kind of person to be a crewman on a sub. Well, he used the words bubble head.

Prayers for the crew and their families.

WE therefore commit this body to the deep, to be turned into corruption, looking for the resurrection of the body, (when the Sea shall give up her dead,) and the life of the world to come, through our Lord Jesus Christ; who at his coming shall change our vile body, that it may be like his glorious body, according to the mighty working, whereby he is able to subdue all things to himself.

American subs are nukes. Bigger mass means more mass to push around. A consideration when you're using a battery to propel you.

I heard this on the news a few days ago. They said that analysis of some audio they record sounded like an explosion. And that the Satellite ph call that was thought to be from the sub wasn't from the sub. Really sad. I hope they and find the sub (if for no other reason) to give the family some closure.

I did not know Argentina had subs. Stinks for sure

I think over 40 countries have subs.Usually small diesel powered attack subs.

Even north korea has several little subs that they mainly use for espionage or to abduct foreign national on beaches.

They are believed to have over 70 subs.

Only 6 countries (China, Russia, the UK, the US, France and India) have much larger nuclear powered ballistic submarines, capable of launching nuclear warheads.

With a nuclear reactor and nuclear warheads on board it's really bad when one of those sink.
Not that it's not bad when you lost the entire crew from a diesel sub of course.

In a few years North Korea might join the nuclear submarine club, they're already working on that.

To my brothers of the 'phin (and sister),
    Heave To and Trice up.
You stand relieved. We have the Watch.
    Liberty commences.

    Another 44 on Eternal Patrol.

O Father, Hear our prayer to thee
    For your humble servants
    Beneath the sea

In the depths of oceans, as oft they stray
So far from night, so far from day
We would ask your guiding light to glow
To make their journey safe below

Please oft times grant them patient mind
Then ‘ere the darkness won’t them blind
They seek thy protection from the deep
Please grant them peace when ‘ere they sleep

Of their homes and loved ones far away
We ask you care for them each day
    Until they surface once again
To drink the air and feel the rain

We ask your guiding hand to show
A safe progression sure and slow.
Dear Lord, please hear our prayer to thee,
    For your humble servants
    Beneath the sea.

    Amen

Safe like your car, bike or house; they are until they aren't. Of course if my house fails I stand a better chance of surviving when I run outside.
