Lot of stuff happens on YouTube. It's a major platform for sharing all sorts of media.

This thread isn't really for sharing YouTube videos, but moreso to discuss the happenings at YouTube, the decisions they make, the community, the big YouTube dramas, the demonitization issues, the 1A/2A controversies, etc.

I'll lead this off with a couple recent occurrences.

    The Logan Paul Situation

Logan Paul is a dip****. This guy is a general clickbait ******* with millions of followers. He has a "shock" shtick, a "look what I'm doing" sort of thing... he's highly disrespectful to other cultures (as you'll see in a moment), and that's just the type of person he is.

About two weeks ago, during a series of videos of Logan visiting Japan, he entered the famous Aokigahara "Suicide Forest" while recording a video. There, he found what you'd expect... a hanging (hung?) body in a tree. They filmed it, they made jokes about the dead person, and they published it to YouTube. This video actually reached YouTube's trending section.

Immediately, the backlash to this video was immense. Huge names spoke out against Logan, the 22 year old dip****.

Aaron Paul: How dare you! You disgust me. I can't believe that so many young people look up to you. So sad. Hopefully this latest video woke them up. You are pure trash. Plain and simple. Suicide is not a joke. Go rot in hell.

Sophie Turner: You’re an idiot. You’re not raising awareness. You’re mocking. I can’t believe how self-praising your “apology” is. You don’t deserve the success (views) you have. I pray to God you never have to experience anything like that man did.

PewDiePie did a few videos discussing the subject, especially touching on the monitization and clickbait aspects of it. It's good to hear some input on it from another YouTuber that understand how these things work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFmSepfF48o

    Logan issued an apology.

Nearly two weeks later, YouTube decided to remove Logan Paul from YT's top-tier of ad revenue, as well as put his YouTube Red projects "on-hold".

YouTube Limits Relationship With Logan Paul After His Video Depicting Dead Body

A tangentially-related situation that I don't have a ton of detail on... Another YouTuber, Shane Dawson, was accused of being a pedophile when a video was made splicing some of his comments in a podcast together to sound bad.

Turns out the person who made the fake pedophile video emailed Shane to let him know that someone in Hollywood paid them to make it, and they posted receipts and the name of the person they received the money from, which is Jeffrey Oscar Levin. Which is the name of Logan Paul's manager. Not sure what to make of that right now, but if it develops, you'll find it here.

    Dave Rubin

Another situation going on right now is Dave Rubin's channel is having problems with monetization. Dave Rubin is a political commentator, satirist and talk show host. His interviews are pretty great, and I suggest checking them out at his channel The Rubin Report

Tucker Carlson Interviews Dave Rubin About "Ominous" Google De-Monetizing YouTube Videos

It seems that, very shortly after Dave publishes a video, it gets demonetized. The way they are being demonetized doesn't seem to be from spam-reports or user abuse... but it seems to be a manual process, a decision made by someone at YouTube. It also doesn't make a lot of sense, because Dave's videos are very professional, and not controversial enough to be considered poor content.

Here are a couple more takes on the YouTube Demonetization stuff:

    Interesting.

YT is part of new media that I haven't really gotten into.

90% of what I watch on YouTube is car related. 1320video, Cleetus McFarland, Mighty Car Mods. So I miss all of the big name drama. 1320 is starting a vlog, so that’s cool.

    Interesting.

YT is part of new media that I haven't really gotten into.

It's where I watch 70% of my content these days.... from people that have quit their day job to make videos everyday, or even once a month. Channels like NoClip will spend months on documentaries into video game companies, for example... and they're just excellent to watch. It's not much different that releasing an article on a mainstream outlet.... just in video form.

It is essentially a different type of employment. People can make millions on Youtube ad revenue... and eventually getting big enough to make their own brand and company (PewDiePie, Yogscast, Game Grumps, Ben Heck, LinusTechTips come to mind.)

So naturally, when there's a lot of money and people's livelihoods on the line... there will be drama.

Not sure I have any solution to the Dave Rubin problem unless someone can be tracked down, as you say, using a manual process to demonetize his videos in violation of Youtube policies/algorithms. Without the identity of the malefactor(s) you can't delve into motive and intent, and thus it's tougher to make the case that the effect should not be happening. I assume Youtube under Google will be just as secretive as Google. Given what we "know" about culture at Google functioning like a combination of cult and re-education camp if you don't toe the SJW line, this could be done by anyone aggrieved by some piece of work Rubin did and with sufficient access. Publicly calling out Youtube may be the best he can do, focus enough attention on the problem so they grudgingly fix it

As for the Logan Paul situation, I would advocate using the same technique Levin was using against Dawson. Find some untrustworthy whore like the one who did the cut and paste pedophile video and have them make a cut and paste video that shows Paul mocking the prophet Mohammad (making sure Levin gets production credit) and see if the two can't be introduced to "interesting times", Salman Rushdie style. One should never put up with snakes in ones midst

    Count Dankula / Markus Meechan

The Count Dankula situation definitely has strong SJW/1A angles to it. Whether you like the joke or not, it's absolutely absurd that the UK is wasting time and resources to arrest and prosecute this guy for jokes.

Man arrested after teaching girlfriend’s pug to perform Nazi salute

Markus Meechan posted a video of his girlfriend's pug, raised it's paw like a Nazi salute, and said some anti-Semitic lines for added absurdity. Meechan said “My girlfriend is always ranting and raving about how cute her dog is so I thought I would turn her into the least cute thing you could think of which is a Nazi.”

Well, the prank didn't land as he intended, and he was arrested and charged for the publication of offensive material that would cause fear and alarm, and stir up hatred on religious grounds, and an alternate charge of posting a video that was grossly offensive because it was 'anti-Semitic and racist in nature'

‘I am not a racist at all, anybody who knows me could tell you that,’ he said. ‘I’m freaked out because everyone’s going to actually think that I hate Jews now and I don’t at all. I’m kind of panicked about it. Honestly I don’t hate anyone. The whole purpose of this was just to annoy my girlfriend. I just want everyone to know that I don’t wish any ill-will on any race or anything, it’s just how shock comedy works. It was strictly made to annoy my girlfriend and give my friends something to laugh at. ‘I am so sorry to the Jewish community for any offence I have caused them. This was never my intention and I apologise.'

His trial was delayed many times, and he gave an update on the trial a few days ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVs6X7_UqAQ

It's bad enough that this even went to trial, but it's a total national embarrassment that this has been dragged out for almost 2 years.

    Being a daft **** shouldn't be a crime.

    Wow.
Steven Spielberg had better watch out; remember the scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” where the monkey gave the Nazi salute in imitation of the humans around him?
Then again, the monkey ended up dying after eating what appeared to be cyanide-poisoned dates, so perhaps he got his just desserts?

I’ve noticed lately, that when I watch videos from channels considered by the leftstopo to be right-wing (Dave Ruben, Jordan Peterson, Sam Harris, Tim Pool are not actually right wing) the ads are from progressive channels. At first I thiught, okay, so maybe that’s not such a bad deal to show ads for alternative viewpoints, as long as it’s reciprocated. So I view some videos from left wing channels and the ads are the same left wing ads. Seems manipulative. Anyone else have that happen?

The only thing I took from this is you're not using an adblocker.

    Why.

I mean... who wants to sit through the occasional unskippable 30 second ad before a brief video?

Use Chrome, install uBlock Origin, say goodbye to ads everywhere. Can even block out elements of pages that aren't even ads.

I thought the crux of the problem you presented was monetization. Not quite sure how ad-blocking doesn't contribute to said difficulties. Jamil's concern is germane, also, if only progressive channels are deriving ad income from conservative content.

It serves to turn off the people watching the conservative content and siphon off revenue

I addition an ad blocker prevents most of the malicious ads trying to convince you to install malware and preventing you from leaving the page.

How does uBlock do on anti-adblocker sites?

How does uBlock do on anti-adblocker sites?

I switched to uBlock when AdBlock started whitelisting things it thought was "acceptable advertisement".

It's not really all that different. Behaves about the same, sometimes works around it. I like how easy it is to choose elements and remove them (like full-page anti-adblock elements... just remove them, and scroll right on through.)

And yes, the major advantage of either one is to prevent malicious ads. Blocking youtube ads is just an added perk.

We are playing in Youtube's house, their rules. It sucks. Some of the names that they have demonetized were great content with a lot of veiws
