After watching a documentary about Chicago Mob and operation Family Secrets it made me really start to wonder about the upturn in violence that Chicago currently has. One of the thoughts that came to my mind is now that they took down the Mob leadership roughly ten years ago it actually made crime worse in the city by no longer having someone rule or at least keep the criminals somewhat in line. The society that the criminals operate also have so called rules and now there is a vacuum that is left unfilled. I understand that the Mob did not have control over various street thugs but I can't help wondering if this has something to do with it. Thoughts?

I believe Chicago's issues are more a product of what happens when liberals get what they want rather than a lack of leadership in the criminal community. Some day it will serve as an example of all that is wrong with the liberal agenda.

I doubt the fall of the mob has anything to do with Chicago violence. The mob had it's hands in a lot of places that haven't taken as severe a downturn as Chicago... and comparatively, when the mob still had power in the city, the murder rate was about the same or higher than it was now.

    Italian Mob? No.

Destruction, civil war, and Balkanization of Black Gangster Disciples and Vice Lords, rise of new African-American gangs to fill the void left by BGD, increased mobilization and relocation of ancient gangs such as the Mickey Cobras, Hispanic gangs flexing muscle in South and West sides? Yes.

From a conservative perspective, you are spot on. The problem is that liberals will never see it as a byproduct of their failed policies. Look at Detroit. Liberal policies absolutely destroyed that city, but they continue down that road.

I won't suggest that conservatives don't have issues of their own, saving liberals from themselves being one of the largest in my opinion.

I kinda always wanted to be a mob lawyer. The career path I had laid out started with disorganized crime, proceeded to kinda organized crime (gangs) and then organized crime. I got lazy and dropped out on step 1.

The mob of yesterday would not have allowed the gang activity of today.

The mob of "yesterday" had nothing to do with drugs and were content to let the race gangs have it (their term). When the mob couldn't stand missing out on the money in drugs, it was just about the same time Giuliani was cutting its heart out prosecuting the bosses. John Gotti killed Paul Castellano specifically so he could take over the Gambino family and get into the drug trade, but Gotti, contrary to popular belief, was simply a thug, and a stupid one at that.

In other words, sure some members eventually wanted in on the drug trade, but that was a stupid thing to want. The old bosses knew that the feds would pour everything into the drug war and while the feds would never really win it, they would successfully put a lot of people away for a long, long time. Things like various fraud, protection, loan sharking, prostitution, casino skimming, gas tax skimming, etc- even if you get caught, you do a few years and then back to it. Drugs? Start at 10 years for not much and jump up to 20+ quickly. Not good.

The old mob would only have gotten involved with the gangs if the gangs rocked the boat and threatened their business. As long as the drug trade stayed in the gang neighborhoods, they wouldn't care. Where do the people get killed with drug related violence today in Chicago? Hint, it's not Italian neighborhoods.

Chicago is a machine city, hopefully America will back away from becoming a machine country.

It's not because of any mob.

The mob of yesterday I speak of is back in the 60's. I also believe that if the revenue from drugs was available back then, as it is today, the mob would have had their hand in it.

Find me a neighborhood that is really Italian in 2018 in Chicago. Before you say Taylor St, or 24th and Oakley walk up and down the streets nearby and tell me who you see.

    That's my point....

There is no "Italian" neighborhood. I grew up in an "Italian" town just west of Chicago. It is no longer "Italian"; however, when it was - we'd never see the kind of gang violence we see today. Just my opinion.
