I've been back/forth on this for some time now but I deleted my Facebook account some time ago and frankly...could not be more happy with my decision. I hated the fact that I was spending too much time with it. I found myself getting into way too many stupid fights and arguments and reading basically nonsense. I miss a few groups I was part of and since my wife has an account I can still see the stuff our grown children post, etc.

I also hated, more and more, realizing that I allow FB to harvest data from me and about me and I decided enough is enough.

Anyone else delete their FB account?

    Thoughts?

Good on you. Especially if that gives you some freedom.

I have friends all around the world that I keep in touch with using FB. I also have some douche nozzle progressive socialist relatives/friends that I enjoy turning their screws.

It is a great way to stay in touch with people, to be sure, but .... for me ... the cons just outweighed the pros. Glad it works well for you.

If you were allowing it to control your life that much, probably a good thing you shut it down. Most of my family is in another state and I have to show them pictures of my grandkids :@ya: so I will be staying on it. But I can spend as much or as little time as I want on it.

The Farcebook account was lost when the SSD froze on my internet computer and I was without a vaild password. As a result it seemed Farcebook wanted nuthang short of DNA to prove my identity, at which point we both decided to no longer have a business relationship. I don't miss the concept of Farcebook per se, however I do occasionally miss access to as example hobbyist group databases there and our Conservation Club has elected to use that means to convey their most recent information.....in spite of having their own website?

INGO is my Facebook that is what my wife says. I first had one around the time Facebook first came out and deleted it in 2011. The reason was just because I found myself looking at it to often and wasting time.... Now I do it on INGO lol. The only reason my wife says she has not gotten rid of her FB is because of her networking with other Doctors in the area.

Probably best to rid yourself of anything that consumes you past the point of self control. I enjoy connecting with friends and family on FB.

I can not delete my faceplant account...as I've never had one. At the beginning of the internet I was put in a position to monitor activity on line and in e-mail accounts, if it touches the web someone has the ability to see and track it. Just like this post. I chose at that time to not participate in the willing disclosure of everything personal. I have not regretted that decision ever.

Facebook collects info on you whether you have an account or not, deleting/avoiding an account will only prevent them from connecting it to you. If you truly wish to avoid facebook you'll need to do some browser/system level changes to prevent your computer from contacting any of the FB domains. Even then you only stop direct collection.

As with all things, it takes mental discipline to prevent being consumed by something. I keep most of the notifications turned off and look at it only when I have some time to burn. INGO on the other hand is another matter.... :): :ingo:

Turned off all features, don't use, just have not deleted/removed my name yet. Been like that for a while. I don't care about other peoples crap and its a big waste of time. I see people consumed by it at the office- on their devices, chatting about other peoples drama and crap. Its quite a study of human psychology.

Mine has been shut down for a couple years but I was told that you can't delete it. I mean you can delete it but it can be restarted very easily so they still store the info. I wish I knew how to erase it but I'm not that savvy.

I never had one to delete.

    This.
If you want to share pictures, memes, whatever get a one drive or google account and use it. No one sees anything unless you give them access and a password.

Wanna keep up with your family and friends? Instead of passing messages back and forth across the keyboards Skype. or Yawcam. Or anything other than letting yourself be sold online as a product for the data brokers.

Don't really see how these are any more private. Have you read Google's privacy statement and terms?

NONE of these types of services are private or secure. It's all in how important the risks and privacy invasion is to you. I still have TwitFace, no personal information is listed, alternate spelling of my name, everything set to private, limited family and friends (8 people). They all know that I won't respond to anything they post on FB or Twit. They know they can send me a message telling me to call them and I'll call when I see it.

The only reason I still have FB & Twit is because I'm in a small county and all of the public services here are too lazy to maintain their own pages to keep people informed. Every single one of them uses FB instead. If you want to know what's happening around here you are forced to use it as well.

As far as the other services, Google and the like, check out their privacy policies and the permissions you give them. The only way to use them safely if to use full encryption on the files you upload. When you do, they will most likely delete those files or send you a nastygram because they can't get nib:poop: through them or scan them to see what they are.

Deleted all my social media accounts a few years ago. Don't even think about that stuff anymore other than the general notion that most social media is a dumpster fire that: One, just uses you as an entity from which they can steal all your ongoings, movements and personal information of you and your friends. Two, a place where "non-progressive" material is suppressed and / or messed with by the mods there.

It's a S***show and its not worth your time or the things you simultaneously sacrifice and contribute to by being on that mess.

You can delete it, but it takes a couple of days and if you reactivate during that "wind down" it cancels the deletion (IIRC).

Deactivate is one thing, delete is another. Process not difficult, but you have to do more than just 2 clicks (maybe 4 LOL).
