I resurrected a different thread for the news, but I'll also say it here: any word about the end of Rahm's career is premature. He has millions of dollars of campaign cash. His career will be just fine.

He will be running for something else, appointed to something or in smoke-filled rooms exercising power behind the scenes.

If for no other reason than contrariness: Rahm was setting up to President. He needed to be in the mayor's office another couple years, maybe more to outlast Trump. I don't believe that's going to happen now. Sure he will land someplace else, but I don't think he will be a first tier power player in the Democratic Party in the future, and that's what his career was about.

As others have noted, I'm sure this is merely a setback for him, if it is even that. I'm sure there is some kind of brokered exit deal with his successor picked for the Chicago D machine to elect, and he will have a soft landing somewhere.

One thing im pretty certain of....the idiots of Chicago will elect someone just as bad if not worse.
Just like when they re elected Jackson even though he was going to prison

... I'm sure there is some kind of brokered exit deal with his successor picked for the Chicago D machine to elect,...

That's kinda the point. Rahm has had two terms as mayor to configure THE Democratic machine in the nation to suit him and make sure he's the next guy to be mayor, governor, whatever he wants, and pfffffft. He didn't make it happen. To the extent that there is still a "machine" in Chicago (looks like it's broken into parts), it told him "You ain't it anymore." A "brokered exit" for him at this point means he's one the way down, not up anymore. A soft landing or appointment to fill out someone else's term of office is a post-career job for him.

Can't help but wonder if the mid-term results might play into this. I'm not familiar enough with who's running over there, but if there is a long-serving representative who gets re-elected, then promptly retires, that might be a fitting place for Rahm to land - from their perspective.

He could then leverage his national connections better.

Not a Rep. He's done that.

Dick Durbin is up for re-election in 2020 (he will be 76). However, the dems are certain they will defeat Rauner this year, so what if Durbin, or even Tammy Duckworth resigns?

In the end, I think it's Durbin out, Rahm in. Senator Emmanuel.

Personally, to me, worse than all of his positions, was his use of one of the oldest and most worn out jokes of the last 150 years: "Abe Lincoln must have been Jewish, because his name was Abraham and he was shot in the temple." I don't mind the ethnic/religious nature of the joke. I mind that it hasn't been funny since Eisenhower's first term. Shecky Greene wouldn't tell that joke.

DemocRATs like him never accept personal responsibility so I'm sure he isnt being forced out. More like the captain of a sinking ship he steared into ruin stealing a lifeboat seat from a woman or child and saving himself while he still can.
We will see him run for president most likely. Senate possibly

    .
I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the presidential race in 2020 along with Hillary and a host of other characters. The anti Trump feeling on the left is so intense that I think it will blind potential candidates, making them think that anybody who runs against Trump is a guaranteed win. Long shot loons will figure 2020 is a golden opportunity not to be missed.

If HRC tries to run again, there'll be an outright mutiny by Dems in the midwest, and probably the more liberal coastline areas. (Ironically, for different reasons.)

I could see Rahm trying for Veep, but I do think the Senate is more his play for now.

I do not know what his plans are, only speculation. Rahm is a puppet, a yes man. He is one who takes orders better that giving orders; he is a poor leader. I believe Chicago was a test run for him, and he failed. He could not lead Chicago and will never be able to lead a country. He "may" be able to make the senate, but I even question that. I see him working tightly with other liberal/socialist leaders as a "hit man", so to speak. He is good in that role. Maybe working for Obama in the future or some other prominent leader of the grape kool-aid followers?

I think he is done with elected office and will make millions as a power broker behind the scenes. His failings have been largely ignored by the Chicago media, they wouldn't be by his opponents in future elections. In the bigger picture I don't think there is a candidate that could pull Chicago out of the mess it is in, anyone with a chance to win would be part of the machine and would continue business as usual.
