I usually buy 10 year or older cars, trucks and trailers. I am considering buying something only a few years old. Are the license plates based on purchase price or the age of the vehicle?

Age matters, but so does type of vehicle. I paid more for a Lincoln Towncar that was several years older than my wife's Jeep, for example. You get a big drop off once the vehicle is 3 years old, too.

You can always estimate your plates here.

But as mentioned above. Plates for newer vehicles are outrageous in Indiana.
When I lived in Tennessee all vehicles were the same whether new or 10 years old. ~$70 a year.

Thanks, it looks like it will be around 175 bucks, not as bad as I feared. I bought a year old trailer a few years ago and I think I got smacked a lot harder for that one
