Anyone good at recalling old movies?

Alright ingoers,

This has been driving me crazy trying to remember a movie.

Maybe made in the late 70s to early 80s?

The only part of the movie plot that i recall was that the lead detective/cop on a murder case was fired or taken off the case, decides to go rogue and kill the suspect with a "lock needle".

As i recall, things didnt end well for him.

This is all the i remember....does this ring a bell to anyone else?
