I have a theory about some of this infestation. But it is best not discussed here.

Formaldehyde ban due to an Indiana company not mixing the stuff right for temporary housing for the hurricane relief effort.
Once it was banned the bugs headed due west in wagon trains similar to our pioneer settlers.
Thankfully the cattle ranchers have declared a range war against them and threaten to hang each and every one of these bugs they find.
Not to worry though 'cause Nancy Pelosi and similar ilk have taken up the cause of escorting them across the border to safer ground for further infestation safe from Pres Trump and his kind.
This should all be resolved by a budget deal soon.

    Local exterminator- "marketing opportunity."

Once the bed bugs get in your house, that's about 6 months of treatments because you should (persistent and hardy little buggers), and another 18-24 months of treatments out of an abject fear of a re-infestation.

Me thinks...follow the money...the ones bit, had the bugs before going to the theatre...and can't afford the exterminator...get AMC to pay for it...BRILLIANT!

Worked on a project to bed bug proof furniture at the height of the scare a few years back. Company shelved the plans when big media move off to something else.

No, it should be one treatment that takes less than 12 hours.

Don't bother with chemical remediation. You want heat.
