    When I was in elementary school we took a trip to a creek to look for fossils. I found this but have no idea what it is. I have a few guesses but purely uneducated. With our solid group of people here i’m Curious if you guys can tell me what it is. I came across it again this week in the garage.

    The “top” is very smooth but uneven. There is an inner material that looks laminated by an outer material. All very hard.

    Just a wild guess on my part, but it almost looks like a fossilized piece of bone, with the center part being where the soft marrow used to be, later replaced by whatever material (sandstone or limestone?) filled in the void left when the marrow decayed.

    Fossilized turd, probably from young Churchmouse.

    Fargo, that was my immediate first thought, too! I believe the technical, paleontology term is “coprolite”.

    I’ve heard of people making jewelry out of coprolites...
