    I thought It was two parties. If you settled, why would there be a jury verdict?

    The jury verdict was almost certainly going to be substantially reduced, either by the trial court or on appeal. It sounds like after losing the trial, they offered him a substantially less money which he accepted in lieu of trying to enforce the verdict and having to fight the appeals..
