CFD has released photos showing the damage from last nights gas explosion... My wife and I had several school dances in this gym. :(

The idiots on the news casts at first almost make it sound like there was a bomb or something that caused the blast and the damage to the building. Then finally there is the “admission” that it was a boiler explosion. Amazing how the first responders who talk to the news people are reluctant to just come out and say what really happened right then and there. After all, the injured worker obviously told them what preceded the boiler explosion.

Holy crap!!! I did not hear about this

any idea why? Thank goodness likely no one there

Boiler relight gone wrong. This part of the school was strictly sports when I was there, but the new addition (bottom left corner of first photo) may have some classrooms. There is extensive water damage as well and I have not heard if that has affected the academic areas of the school.

You’re younger than me. I graduated in 1996, I don’t think we had that area done but was probably right after I left

Comparing GIS photos show the explosion was in the area added between 1996 and 1998, next to the large gym, north of the main indoor arena. I was never in HS sports so I was not in that part enough to know what was there other than maybe locker rooms mechanical and storage.

Did they say it was the gas that ignited? That kinda looks to me more like the boiler was under pressure and let loose.

That'd make a bigger bang than the gas, from what I've read.

I wonder how much is actual explosion damage and how much the hose jockeys (nothing personal firefighters just a joke) destroyed making sure all hot spots were out.

and yes gas could have caused this....a lot of boilers in schools have 10 psi delivery with 2" lines.....a lot of gas out in a short amount of time...

I watched the tv news report(s) last night on two different channels. My nephew is a Lt. on CFD and his mother texted us to say his face might be on camera. The CFD spokesperson, not our nephew, when asked for comments stated the department response time was “a minute or less to be on scene” - to which I call BS. Ain’t no dept. gonna be on scene in under a minute even if the shift personnel are sitting it a running engine waiting to be paged out ! I’ll give them kudos for their actions, but the guy didn’t need to resort to hyperbole to make CFD look good.

Having worked in Carmel, and knowing the ridiculous runs CFD has to take, there very well may have been an engine in-service on its way back to the firehouse, that was fortunate enough to get there that quickly.

The boilers in schools are not high pressure units and are most likely hot water loops not steam. Those systems will only explode when the gas gets out of control. A serious delayed ignition for example. And I do mean a serious delay.

I had the same thought. The engine would have had to be almost on site to respond in a minute. Unless “respond” doesn’t mean what I think it does...
