I grew up in Owensboro with the Waltrips, Greens and Mayfields. I have many great Nascar memories and still enjoy the sport. I'm not a fan of these youngsters replacing "my drivers" but I understand the money has changed the sport. Still and always a fan.:rockwoot:

I have a tenancy to like Smoke's team due to the local aspect. I'm not real pumped about Suarez though, we'll see how it goes? I still like Boyer and Harvick though, Almirola too.

If none of them are in the mix, or even maybe if they are, I'll root for Kyle Larson or Ryan Blaney every time.

Driving on dirt can certainly build certain skills. But one doesn't have to be a tater digger to learn to hanfle a car.

Yes there are a few pavement specialists that make it big. But most you will find have a dirt background. I can’t think of a true pavement guy offhand.

Trust me bro, most the guys who have "made it big" made it because their seat is practically bought. To "make it big" you have to go to a team with sponsorship dollars in hand and in some cases the driver has to put some skin in the game too. There is a reason drivers have a whole marketing team working for them exclusive from what the team owner has. Very rarely does a driver land a gig based solely on skill...almost never.
I have known many drivers as good or better than many who "made it big" in terms of their skill set. This is in large part why so many cup drivers are so young, its all about marketability

I think it's more along the lines of almost all drivers get started on dirt because there are way more dirt tracks than there are asphalt tracks. I have 4 dirt tracks that I know of within 2 hours of me, but only 1 pavement track (Salem). Also the dirt tracks seem to have cheaper classes to run so its easier for someone starting out to get their feet wet and be competitive.
