On February 5, 1909, New Yorker Leo Baekeland presented his invention of Bakelite, the first synthetic plastic, to the American Chemical Society.

I always wondered why the stuff was called "Bakelite". I guess it was an anglicization of his name for marketing purposes.

Cool post, had no idea it's the world's first synthetic plastic. If only bakelite AK mags weren't ridiculously priced I'd actually own something made out of it
