Today at Stately Freeman Manor there was a meeting of the minds as my dad came up for lunch. We discussed the various projects to be done here at SFM this year.

New floor for kitchen was deemed a priority for the list.

Dad suggested vinyl plank. Anyone have any experience with it? What has worked best?

Any other material that I should be considering?

I have a cement floor in the garage.

Uh, OK, but my kitchen is not in my garage.

I mean, this is America, do your house as you will, but . . . I don't have that.

I'm huge proponent for Hardwood flooring or at least Hardwood Veneered engineered Flooring. The fake Material does not hold heat like real wood, and Wood is truly the green choice enviromentally. Everything from Black walnut to Oak. PM if you want to know more, i work ancillary to the hardwood industry.

Life proof from Home Depot. I absolutely love mine. Easy to clean and extremely hard to scratch. My wife had a little giant ladder collapse on her while we were finishing up our new house. Hardly left a mark. If we didn’t know it was there we wouldn’t even be able to tell.

We just covered up tile with large grout lines and did luxury vinyl plank. I absolutely love it. Our hundred pound Labradoodle has not scratched it and it has been in for two weeks.

I put in shaw vinyl plank in every room in the house that had carpet.
My wife has 3 dogs, dogs and carpet don't go very well together:)
    I really like the stuff
It's easy to install and it looks great.

We just installed that "Life Proof" in a house last week.
Installation was easy, final product looked great.

If at all possible, choose a product with an attached underlayment.
If not, purchase an underlayment separately. It generally helps with noise.
    Also consider the transitions.
You will likely want transitions to match the flooring.

Base trim may need to be moved up or down to accommodate difference between old flooring and new.
An option to this is to add quarter-round on the trim.

Most any solid vinyl plank would do, but when talking flooring, "you get what you pay for".
I would NOT go with the cheapest.

Your kitchen should be a quick turnaround.

    .
We bought the high quality vinyl plank for our kitchen, it's durable, warmer than tile on my wife's feet, looks good. What Mgderf said, get the good stuff.

We just did LVP all throughout my dads house. Tough as nails and waterproof. I stopped by when they were doing the installation. Our contractor (one of our INGO members) gave me a demonstration to how durable it is by beating a scrap piece with a hammer. Didn't damage it at all. I was impressed, and it looks great.

I have tile and wood. Tile has heled up very well. The wood not so much. Kids and dogs have done a number to it.

Glad to hear the floor is o.k. but did the wife survive?

+4-5 on Lifeproof at HD. They have a thick version that is made to lay right over ceramic tile and grout lines. Stuff is amazing! Do yourself a favor and use a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade to cut it. Good utility knife will do it but takes much longe and doesn’t cut it any cleaner.

Is the Life Proof product at Home Depot really "Waterproof"?

I will be replacing an engineered wood kitchen floor that has water damage from a backed up floor drain in the nearby utility room.
With a 60 year old home on a slab, I doubt that the floor will stay dry forever.
