Sorry as I can not find the other thread talking about the 2018 tax returns and right now I just want to vent.
    My cousin is an id....!
He is single, no kids and typically gets a refund of around $2500 each year.

Yesterday he called to complain about his return. His refund was only $250 and he was pissed and said that accountant #1 (note 1) did them wrong. That he was going to take them somewhere else to have it looked at. I made the mistake of asking him a few questions. I asked him if this last year his check went up by a few dollars? He said he did get about a $40 increase. I told him then you got your refund early in the form of increase money bi-weekly. He did not understand this. I was going to look at his numbers and break it down but figured its not worth it. He said he was going somewhere else to have tghem redone and hung up.

I'm not sure how much he spent at the first place my guess is $80. No clue where he went for the second look or if it cost him. I know this is mean but I it should cost him for being stu...!

What even ticks me off more is in his rant about getting so little he said he buddy who works with him (married, 1 kid) is getting a bigger refund than last year. 2 DIFFERENT TAX SITUATION! Not to mention you can NOT compare yourself to another person when you do not know their entire tax situation. IDIO...!!!!

Note 1: Not going to name the company as it is not their fault.

Yep, I was blessed that I had a bigger return and little bigger paychecks starting 2019 but yeah, lot of people.. especially media dimwitcrats trying to say see.. trump tax cuts screwed you.. well, no they didnt.. not changing withholding status can but in those cases they should be able to look at their yearly gross and net and see its probably 1500-2000 more in alot of cases. Trump has laid out a new tax plan that is for middle class only that he would like to get passed, it would cut another 10% off middle class workers but with the old American socialist party controlling Congress it's not likely to get done.

$5 says first place was not an accountant

    Not for $80 it wasn't...

Anyhow... I'm in the same boat. Single and no kids. My real accountant should have my return done any day now and I'm also curious to see what happened. My tax cut resulted in about an extra grand throughout the year on my pay checks, so we'll see if it was a wash or if I actually got a real cut.

What I'm really hoping here is that republicans have learned a lesson and the next time we get a tax cut, after democrats run it through the moon when they have all the power again, will not push a change to withholding status and simply refund it at the end of the year. That seems to be what the people that can't do basic math actually want.

End withholding tax. All it does is ensure the government eats before my kids do.

they’ve proven their collections have nothing to do with their spending. Once the deficit surpasses income tax/fica/SS collected I think we should be forced to end withholding. Oh yeah... probably already has

I've been saying for years that we should all have to pay our taxes at the end of the month like the rest of our bills. Things would change really fast in this country if everyone was writing a literal check for twice their mortgage/rent every month.

That's one of the very few political statements I'll ever make a counter argument to that will make me sound like a democrat (well... a democrat from decades ago)...

A flat sales tax penalizes the poor and rewards the rich because the poor have to spend much more of their money to get by, while by percentage the rich have to spend very little. A flat income tax is the most fair to everybody. You make a dollar, you cough up the same % as everybody else to the feds.

And then, yes, abolish the IRS.

Consider though if lower income persons were not paying income tax at all they may not be nearly as poor. Like a ballpark number that's fairly accurate is, if you bring home 500 a week, you are probably making 700 and paying close to 200 in soc, fed, state etc

I feel the net result on the poor will be essentially the same under the current system or your proposal since the poor have to spend 100% of their money anyhow. However, the wealthy would take a huge tax break from a national sales tax because they have to spend far less of their money.

Don't read me wrong here though. If you're in the 50% of people that pay any taxes at all I feel you're probably already getting robbed. I'm not making some statement about the "1%". In my example, I fall into "wealthy" since I don't have to spend 100% of my income every month.

It was fun listening to the media talking heads explode over people getting lower tax refunds. Took a while for reality to set in and a couple admitted that getting more in your paycheck throughout the year usually means less of your own money given back to you.

It is amazing how some people look at a tax refund as an amazing bonus, so use it as a forced savings. Most can't comprehend that it is their money in the first place, and letting the government have so much that they refund is a sham. There are a few people who actually believe that the government is being nice and giving them back a bonus, which seems to be the case with jedi's friend.

Then maybe “the poor” should do something to make themselves not “poor”? Second job, quit smoking, quit spdrinking, quit making babies, dunno, just spitballing?

I've heard that assertion before: a full FIFTY PERCENT of the population is dumber than average! :):

Except, of course, at Lake Wobegon, where everyone is above average.

It is a tax REFUND. You overpaid your taxes, here's what we owe you back. People just can't seem to grasp that. I would rather keep more of my paycheck each week than overpay and get it back in a lump sum.

With "earned income credit", many do get a bonus.

The cousin would not be one of those though.
