I rent a lot of different vehicles as I travel a lot on my job, my latest gig is in Missouri.

This week I am driving a Jeep Trailhawk. It's the first time I've ever driven one. And that's enough to convince me that I'll never own one.

I am working out in the boonies. It's about 35 miles from the hotel in Jefferson City to the power plant where I'm working. About 100 miles from the plant to the airport in Saint Louis where I picked up the Jeep.

This is my 4th day, arrived on Monday, and already had to gas up once, and I don't know if there's enough gas left to make the 100 mile drive back to the airport. It has a 15.8 gallon tank, and must get some pretty poor gas mileage too. Combine poor gas mileage with an undersized tank, and seems like I have to stop for gas way too much.

To make it even worse, not sure if it's a 4 or a 6, but it's about as anemic running of a vehicle as it gets. Not my cup of tea.

    Rant over.

    Over. :n00b:

Jeeps have always been horrible on gas mileage. Wife had a Jeep Liberty with 3.7l v6. Bought her a Ford expedition with 5.4l v8 and it gets the same gas mileage as the Jeep. Of course a Jeep is nothing more than a Fiat anymore and more than enough reason for me to stay away.

My Wrangler has an abnormally small tank as well, barely over 300 mile range with a topped off tank.

My TJ has a 16 or 17 gallon tank and I also fill up around 300 miles. I never really considered that to be short range. The mileage is poor (around 17 with the stock tires and around 15 with 31 10.50s) but I never considered the range to be limited.

My Escort gets almost 40mpg and has like a 9 or 10 gallon tank, which makes them about equal.

Anyhow, the worst I've ever had was a 74 GMC 1/2 ton full-time 4x4, 350 4 barrel. That truck would consistently get about 9 in town and would absorb BOTH 20 gallon tanks between weekly paychecks.

Oh! I take it back. I had a '76 Caddy Fleetwood with the 500 in it that someone removed the fuel filter from. It got 6mpg when I first got it. I got it UP to 9 before I sold it. Believe it or not, deleting the fuel filter on that car was massive performance increase (it was still amazingly slow for 500 cubes, but...).

Well there’s your problem. Should’ve rented the trackhawk not the trailhawk. A couple letters is easy to miss. :D

At first I thought that's what he did and I had to go back and re-read it when I noticed his post wasn't sarcastic or filled with pictures of a rental car with melted tires.

Ford 1 ton duelly. 460 gas engine with 4.10 gears. You could pull anything you wanted to. It got 8 MPG towing, not towing, idling, setting idle not running. No matter it avg. 8 MPG.

Towing to Bowling green in the hill country it avg. 7 MPG

    Twin tanks. 1 35 and 1 25.

I just corrected the model. It's a Trailhawk, not a Cherokee. Just leaving now for the airport, hope I don't have to stop for gas until I get there.

Trailhawk is a trim level, not a model. If it sucks that bad, it's probably a Compass with the weak 2.4 liter 4 cylinder.

Either way, you're basically driving a Fiat.

97 Ranger 4X4 extended cab with a 4.0L V6 and 3.73 gets 15 back and forth to work. Exactly half what my Civic gets. Could be why I drive the Civic most days.
