RIP Senator. A true statesman and indiana son.
He was a good man, whether i always agreed with him politically or not. Much respect for the man. A Real Lion in the senate and a veteran too.
My thoughts go out to his family and former aids.

While Lugar might have been a good human being, like melensdad said, he was too much like John McCain and too often forgot that the people of Indiana told him how to vote.

He was a moderate Republican and will always be hated for it. Politics is broken.

There was nothing moderate about him. He didn't get to be Obama's favorite Republican by being moderate. He was a liberal who happened to have started somewhere that you had to swear allegiance to the elephant in order to have a successful political career.

Dick Lugar was not a statesman. He was a spineless politician who bent with the wind, very much in the mold of John McCain.

I wish no ill will on him or his family but I’m not going to pretend he was something he was not.

    Hear! Hear!

Well I personally worked with the man and his staff to help 3 veteran friends of mine and he helped me too. Ill be forever grateful to him for that and his service as a public servant. I have never agreed with any politician 100% of the time on every issue ever.
To compare Senator Lugar to john mccain (who I grew to despise), is a mischaracterization. I can't dispute anyones personal interactions with the man, those are yours alone and your perception is your reality. But on the politics, he was a statesman and im proud to have briefly known the man looking back.

Politics aside I give him respect for being a Veteran and a Hoosier. Rest in peace.
Honestly, I don't really give a **** what anyone around here thinks about it, so RIP, Senator Lugar. :patriot:

He was an elected official who used his independent judgment when he thought it was the right thing to do. RIP, Senator.

This is more generous than I would be. The last time I encountered that little mother*cker in person ...

I actually knew him. He was in my fraternity, although older than me by many years, he would come to the fraternity house frequently. We jogged together. Good human but absolutely a 'politician' who betrayed those who voted for him, time after time after time.

Lugar is one of the reasons I left the GOP and became a libertarian.

OK people. I have trashed to posts and will trash some members. The man is dead. You can share your opinions in a civil manner or join the rest of the folks gone from here in the land of the banned.

My spouse's family knew him. I did not care for him. Not in the least. That is as rough as this needs to get.

Believe it or ignore me as has become all to common.

    .
I think Dick Lugar was a good and capable man who went to dc and came to see things differently when he became a player on the world stage. This has an affect on everybody to some degree and the longer they are in dc the more it works on them regardless of how resistant you are to it. I see him as very different from John McCain who was much more emotional and self focused, qualities in leadership that don't bring good results. I remember the 70s, a time when people talk about leadership working across the aisle, compromise, but it was also a time where everything was moving slowly left towards eventual socialism. That started to change in the 80s and you heard the word "partisanship" tossed out by the left a lot in a derogatory manner. I saw this more as whining that things weren't just going to continue to go their way. With the wall coming down at the end of the decade I felt that the world was moving in a good direction and life would be better for my sons. Dick Lugar deserves better than to be remembered as Bill Clinton's favorite republican, so I'll think about that over a glass of bourbon tonight. RIP.

RIP Senator Lugar. I remember he and his family's yard abutted my aunt and uncle's back yard when he was mayor of Indy and my father worked with him when Dad was with the Marion County Health Department. As Leadeye alluded to, I think that DC and its ways changed the man and perhaps not for the better, but I respect his many years of service from mayor to senator.

If you consider your situation with Sen. Lugar, you may also realize that Sen. McCain probably had a myriad of veterans and non-veterans alike who loved him because he helped them.

RIP, Sen. Lugar. His retirement from the US Senate was long overdue and I still harbor resentment for some of his bad decisions, but he will be missed by many whose lives he touched. He also worked hard and was never a dick in public (to my knowledge), which are becoming increasingly rare among his former peers.

Much can be learned by our two Indiana guys in the Senate from Sen. Lugar's career. I hope they were paying attention to both the good and the bad and learn from both his successes and his mistakes.

Im sure there were. Also a lot that felt betrayed by mccain.
I agree with your ENTIRE post. You were respectful. I dont have to agree with someone to recognize them as a statesman. Also statesman can lose focus. His time to retire came and we (myself included) voted for someone else.

Earlier in his career I was a fan, late in his career, not so much. He led a life of service, and did well for Indiana and his family. He likely had the connections back in the 80's 90's to become President but he never seemed to be that interested in the job. Pretty sure Uni-Gov came to be under his reign as mayor of Indianapolis (1968-1976)...36 years in the US Senate is too long for anyone.

    RIP sir
