MAD Magazine, the irreverent and highly influential satirical magazine that gave the world Alfred E. Neuman, will effectively cease publication some time later this year after 67 years, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

Sources tell THR that after issue 9, MAD will no longer be sold on newsstands and will only be available through comic book shops as well as mailed to subscribers. After issue 10, there will no longer be new content in subsequent issues save for the end-of-year specials (those will be all-new). Beginning with issue 11, the magazine will only feature previously published content — classic and best-of nostalgic fare — from its massive fault of the past 67 years. DC, however, will also continue to publish MAD books and special collections.

On Wednesday night, MAD cartoonists David DeGrand and Evan Dorkin took to social media to confirm and lament the closure of the magazine. The news follows writer Dan Telfer's tweet earlier this week about being laid off as a senior editor at the magazine.

Could be anywhere
Like much of print media I suppose it is a thing of a bygone era. I still have several of their special editions on a shelf here but have not purchased anything of theirs for some time. They were hilarity in their day.

I’m shocked they have lasted this long. Look at their target audience, junior high age/mentality boys. How does an upscale comic book with political humor compete with a boy’s handheld entertainment device (phone) that not only provides humor but also porn of a level never seen by mortal boys decades ago.

Long ago fan with good memories of Mad Magazine.

edit: speaking of junior high age/mentality boys, moments after posting “Hot Chicks Fishing” scrolls to the top of New Activity.

I guess my collection from 97 to roughly 02 will increase in value. After 2000 my buying of the mag was sporadic

Back in my rebellious years (Jr High) we had to put other magazine covers on them or risk confiscation. The "lick um stickers" often found within apparently were not approved decoration for school property. Who'd of thought? I haven't opened the pages of one in the last 30 or so years, suspect they won't be missed on my part, but the memories sure are nice.

It always amazed me how the could make fun of the just released movies or latest sit-coms.

It's been well over 40 years since I read those, but when I was a kid, I read them faithfully. Always good reading. Like 4651 says, I won't miss them since it's been another lifetime that I have read them, but I will have the memories.

It's not surprising.
I grew up reading Mad in the 60's and 70's.
They made fun of everybody, NOBODY was spared. :-)

Nowadays, there's hardly anybody left that we're allowed to parody anymore without being attacked.
People need to get over their selves.

Same for me. Always took a few along on family vacations for reading in the back of the station wagon.

Nope. To late. The PC mindset has been deeply ingrained.
