42 years to the day after a major blackout in 1977, NYC has had another blackout.

So, is it Russians, Chinese, Iran or an angry squirrel that bit through the wrong wire?

A transformer fire caused a large-scale power outage in parts of New York City Saturday evening, knocking out traffic lights, stalling elevators and limiting subway service.

As of 9 p.m. Saturday, Con Edison reported that more than 45,000 customers were without power in an area that included Midtown Manhattan and the Upper West Side. The New York Fire Department said the outages impacted 71st Street south to 42 Street and east from the West Side Highway to 5th Avenue.

Around here, a power outage is an excuse to use the lanterns and other camping and emergency gear at home.

In NYC, I'm thinking it's more along the lines of terror and panic.

Yep. Pull out the generator and listen to that baby purr all night.

Lower NY state has had brown outs all summer since the 60s when I lived there. They have more demand than the power distribution system can handle. Too high a demand and over worked equipment = blackout. They have quite a few small ones that are localized that never make the news. My daughter lives in Queens she tells me about them quite often.
