Who do you trust to test your hearing?

I am 62 years old and been shooting for a lifetime (I use hearing protection). I have spent many hours working with loud machinery. Sometimes I will hear someone speak and there is a split second before I realize what was actually said. My most frequent problem is I have trouble hearing someone specifically when there is a background noise.

As you were writing your post, my wife was trying to get me registered with the VA. Hearing loss is becoming a real problem for me.

Audiologist (technician w/ training) or Otolaryngologist (a medical doctor for ears). I would go to the Dr. and stay away from the hearing aid store until the Dr. says you need one.

I could come over and yell embarrassing things at you until you learn to hear it because you know what's good for you.

I recently went to get my ears cleaned. ENT Dr. drew a 1/4 x 3/8 plug out of my right ear. Left ear was twice the length. And I wear headphones, don't use the push in ear plugs. Now I can hear every command the spouse makes. Life is so much better.

I've heard good things about Costco's hearing aids. Do you have them?

Yes, I have used Costco from day one; now going on 8 years or so. I originally went to an independent and received a test and brought it to my ENT and concurred. The independent told me the prices and I jumped out of my seat (over 6k for 2). I challenge that and she asked me, well how god do you want to hear?!!! I got up and walked out. Went to Costco and had another test which matched the independent and ENT. For my first pair I paid 1899 for 2 with a 3 year warranty and unlimited checks. (you will not find a better warranty). Three years later the technology changed so I upgraded. Excellent pricing and outstanding warranty and service. I bought these in Illinois. When I moved here the warranty was over but I needed service. I went to Costco and they said service is free for the life on the unit; even though the replacement warranty was over! OUTSTANDING! Also, batteries are much cheaper at Costco.

Since then my wife has bought them at Costco; we love it. Did I mention you have SIX months to decide if you like them? If not you can get a different pair or refund!

Yes, I fully endorse Costco hearing department. Latest technology, best pricing, OUTSTANDING warranty and return policy.

BTW, Costco does have some audiologists that work for them; however I was always seen by a state licensed hearing aid specialist. I was also encouraged to being the results to my doctor if I had any questions. Both my wife and I did exactly that, initially. I do not feel it is necessary at this point; it's just an added cost.

The reason I like Costco is because of their value. Both independents and doctors charge WAY too much for hearing aids and do not hesitate taking the money. The hearing aids you get at Costco are name brand and/or rebranded for them. The warranty, return policy and service cannot be beat by anyone. I just feel it is sad that many many locations (audiologists and or doctors) charge much more for the exact same product with same features.

Hearing aids DO NOT bring your hearing back to 100%. No device can replace what God created, it just doesn't happen. In a society where people cannot afford medical care or drugs, they get raped on hearing aids and eyeglasses. If we can obtain the same results with an equal product and save $2k - 4k (or more), then we need to spread the word. Too many people go without aids due to the overpricing we see in many many locations.

My suggestion for the naysayers, check it out yourself. Go to the doctor or independent and have a test and price the hearing aids. Then go to Costco and have a test and proce the hearing aids. Compare features and do an online review search of the products you looked at. Do a complete comparison....warranty, service and return policy.

I'd be interested in your findings.
