I saw the signs both for and against this past weekend when we went to Danville. Other than that I know nothing about it.

I think their problem was adding in the “pork.” Two pools, new softball field, new band area, etc. If they said it was for routine maintenance, teacher salaries, etc. then it wouldn’t be facing the challenge that it is.

Yeah, It has gotten a little ugly. Sort of pitted friends against friends.....I hope none of them let it ruin lifelong friendships. I am one of them who could really care less, I live in a $100,000 older, smaller shack and pay less than $1000 a year. Mine would only go up about $200 a year. But I know people who will pay over 40% more, one of my friends will pay about $500-600 a month additional property tax, but his rich soul lives in a $750,000 house, so you know how that is. Gotta pay to play. People with rental property will get hit very hard, but they will just pass it on to renters. Farmland is the real beef....you know how it is, every farmer claims to be broke and they say they can't pass the increased cost along.

I really don't have a problem with them taxing to improve and maintain schools. I do have a problem with the schools not taking care of the taxpayers money, not using it wisely....and then deceiving and backstabbing people in this community to push thru a referendum, on an off election cycle. I think that will backfire on them, many people will vote now that otherwise would have stayed home, both for and against.

Some of the things this school system has done over the last 10 years makes no sense. They bought 13 acres for $38,000 an acre($521,000) and then paid to tear down barn to have an open field, they completely renovated the football and baseball field and installed artificial turf on football field(although to this day they refuse to say the cost of renovations), they sold the old school that was valued a couple million to the Town of Danville for a little bit of nothing.....and this list goes on and on. Now they want like $52 Million, $12 Million for the pools....lmao, crazy.

Danville is not like Avon, Plainfield or Brownsburg.....and we don't ever want to be. I just wish the newer people to our community would understand that.......

Westfield had something similar a few years ago. The bleeding hearts continued the mantra: but it's for the children. How could you say no? Simple, with the property tax structure in Indiana, the American dream of home ownership is over, done, finished, impossible because even with no mortgage to pay, you still rent your property from the county. The tax increase we had "for the children" helped push my property tax up to a level that it takes two full months of my retired income just to keep from getting evicted from my Hamilton county landlord.

So for Danville and others, hard to fight the "for the children" cry, but at some point enough will have to be enough.

The law was passed to tax personal home property tax at 1%.
The schools have figured out a way around the 1% tax by using a referendum.

What happened to the money from the lottery??? Problem is, it is never enough. The schools think your house is their piggy bank.. They need to get their finances in order.

Rob Kendall is on WIBC and talks about the referendums from tome to time.

    bingo!

And they take and take. This time it will be oh we must have this for the children and its just a one time tax increase. Until the next time and the next time.
Schools are just as bad as some of these churches with their hands out all the time and leaders living large

Been watching Danville closely, as Brownsburg Schools is also watching. We told Brownsburg "no" just a couple of years ago. There are grumblings beginning again. If Danville voters allow this, Brownsburg voters will have to deal with it yet again.

Of course, we have our own issues. Town wants to raise the water rates some HUGE amount. Turns out, they have been using water funds for non-water purposes for years. Oops. Now the games begin, to see if they can sneak it in (the "out in the open" way didn't work). Glad I don't live inside town limits.

As for schools: they know their budget. They get a percentage of property taxes. That's it. Live within it.

We went thru this almost 2 years ago. They pushed this thru by telling people it was tax neutral and their taxes wouldn't go up. What people failed to realize was that there property taxes were set to go down. Lake county was exempt from the 1% cap for a lot of years and was set to take effect. So the sheep voted to pass the referendum. It turned out most people with homes valued over 120k there taxes stayed the same(instead of going down) but it hurt the people who could least afford it the most. If your house was valued under the 120k your taxes not only didn't go down but went up. Cost me personally another $200 per year, instead of taxes going down and saving me $200 per year. 10 years ago my property taxes were under $400 per year, they're now $1200

This theft all across the board (local, state, and federal) is getting real old!

Where ever my GPS says I am
Vigo county has one also this election. Seen signs for both yes and now. They are apparently in the red. This is of course after the last super got at least 200k a year, a police car (unmarked, was a special deputy) and two of his employees stole at least hundreds of thousands in an illegal scheme.

the problem I have with it is that the previous super never once mentioned being in the red. They are talking about redistricting, closing schools, selling the headquarters and moving it to a closed school, and that is with them passing the referendum. I’m leaning towards voting no on it. If the casino referendum passes, they might get some more tax revenue to help also. Of course there are people against that also due to the economic blow it might have (apparently those people having looked at Vigo county lately on how it is doing economically).

Can someone explain what they want to do with two pools? Where does one school system put TWO pools? One in the high school and one in the middle school, or ??? My kids are swimmers and I can actually sympathize with wanting aquatic upgrades... most school natatoriums are pretty bad. But seriously, TWO pools? :dunno:

Schools have plenty of money. It's not our fault they can't manage it properly. Look at what the administrative overhead costs are, and I bet you can find plenty of pool money there.

OK, that's certainly true. I've never seen such incompetent bureaucracy as in a large school district.

Having plenty of money, eh, not so much.

Never vote to raise your own taxes. Never.

I suppose I could add: "unless they have consistently used the money they have efficiently, without waste and corruption and can demonstrate a concrete need."

....but it's easier just to say: "Never"....because I have never seen a governmental entity meet those qualifications.

Fixed it for ya, lol. So a church (or any other entity) asking for money is the moral equivalent of the state stealing money from the citizens? Ok...

If I stop contributing to my church or the NRA because I don't like the way they spend the money, there is a very low chance that agents with arrest warrants will show up at my house.
