Since we're all shut ins now... Anybody seen any good new movies?

I watched 1917 last night and enjoyed it. Trench warfare looks like the worst thing ever invented.

Watched Midway a few days ago. Good story (bits of historical accuracy that required an INGO bubblehead to fill me in on even), but the performances were a little meh...

I'd also never seen Jeremiah Johnson until last week. Figured if we're all going to have to get our mountain man on, I'd better get trained up.

I'll just spitball some stuff I've seen or been thinking about lately that was interesting. Most aren't new-new but may be new to people who don't live in front of a computer like me.

-Invisible Man 2020 was decent and fun, not really memorable enough to pay full VOD price.

-The Hunt was fun and had a great lead, not as clever as it thought it was but amusing for horror fans.

-There's a recent movie called Danger Close on Amazon right now, about an Australian unit in the Vietnam War. Not bad.

-All four seasons of Banshee are also on Amazon, it's like if Justified were made by Skinemax.

-I saw Underwater in the theater a couple months back, because I'm a sucker for deep sea horror movies. It was solid, can't find it anywhere now but I expect it to get dumped on digital soon.

-If you haven't sat through the first season of The Boys yet, it's a riot.

-From a couple years ago, The Siege of Jadotville on Netflix if you missed it. Most FAL porn you've ever seen on a screen.

-Another "if you missed it" that should be an INGO classic, Harry Brown is on Amazon. Death Wish if it was set in the UK, starring Michael Caine.

-Earlier this year I had the distinct pleasure of watching Road House for the very first time in my life. It is an amazing movie.

-A year or two old, Hunt for the Wilderpeople. Sam Neil and a juvenile delinquent evade the authorities in the Australian bush.

-Zombieland Double Tap, if you liked the first one it's worth it.

Probably have more later when I get back home and dig through some recent viewing.

I just finished it up. Not bad!

The action sequences made me thing someone took Heat and Dredd and made a hybrid of them.

Also, if you haven't seen Heat or Dredd (especially Dredd, since it seems a lot of people skipped this because of the cheesy '90s version), both are highly recommended.

Heat is probably the most epic gun porn movie made in the '90s and Dredd is basically sci-fi John Wick.

I believe The Hunt will be next. Looks interesting.

Underwater looks cool too, but no home video release until next month. :(

I'll probably check out Harry Brown too.

Can confirm The Boys and Zombieland 2 are well worth your time.

You've never seen Roadhouse before? Is it cold under that rock?

If you want to have some fun and perhaps keep peace with the lady folk in the house, watch Dirty Dancing first and Roadhouse afterward. Then imagine they take place in the same universe and Swayze is the same character.

Nobody puts baby in the corner, and I'll rip your throat out if you try it!

Since nobody has grabbed the torch here and suggested anything else good, I'll mention something not good just for lolz.

    The Way Back

Somebody decided that a sad, drunk, R rated version of Hoosiers, except with generally unlikable characters, was a good idea. The movie itself isn't "bad", I'm just having a hard time figuring out what audience it aimed to reach. It's not really a good redemption story, it's certainly not a good sports story, and with the language (the only reason for the R rating) it's not a family drama either. If you put all of the elements down on a sheet of paper it would actually seem like a lot to work with, but... yikes. The implementation was poor.

I expected it to be a cheesy and ham fisted Affleck "feel gooder", but it's way something else.

i thoroughly enjoyed Jojo Rabbit. It is not your typical WWII movie but I thought it was great. It is one of the few movies I had to purchase after I saw it.

The plot synopsis sounds hilariously odd. I'll check it out!

Ohhh! I'm seeing it's from the same director/writer that did What We Do In The Shadows, which is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. He also did Thor Ragnarok and Hunt For the Wilderpeople (also hilarious).

I just went from "will check it out" to "REALLY EXCITED to check it out!"

    Thanks, HK!

I was really Jonesin' to see Jojo Rabbit and asked the local theater about it. They said the market for Nazi humor was a little thin in Mooresville so they wouldn't be showing it.:xmad: Have to wait for the DVD at a decent price now.

It's at Redbox for $1.80/night. :dunno:

I'll also say again that What We Do In The Shadows is crying funny and that one should be easy to find cheap to buy if that's what you prefer.

    Not new but,

I recommend Lucky, free on Hulu, $3 on Amazon.

Same vein different great actor - The Hero. free on Hulu, $3 on Amazon.

If you like cheesy sci-fi check out The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension or Earth Girls Are Easy.

If you like Tom Selleck the Jesse Stone movies are good.

    Paul Newman film festival:

    The Hustler
    Harper
    Hombre
    Cool Hand Luke
    The Drowning Pool
    Slap Shot
    Road To Perdition

Movies Matt Dillon was good in:

    My Bodyguard
    The Flamingo Kid
    Wild Things
    There's Something About Mary

    The under appreciated Fred Ward:

    The Right Stuff
Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (campy classic)
Tremors (more cheesy sci-fi, but fun)
    Miami Blues

Jojo Rabbit is great, can confirm!

But... It was a bit darker that I expected given the prior work of the writer/director, but certainly not as dark as a movie with that subject matter could be expected.

    ---

I wouldn't go as far to say they're "good", but I do also enjoy the Jesse Stone movies.

If you don't like Tom Selleck the Jesse Stone movies are a no go. Decent TV movies based on pretty good books.

If you like Sci-fi you can try to find the Dresden files TV series. Not sure if it's available. That's another one that you probably wouldn't like if you don't like the source books.

    Music movies to consider:

    Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll
    It Might Get Loud
Standing In The Shadows of Motown
    Twenty Feet From Stardom

I would agree with that. He makes the character for sure. I was probably also too harsh by lumping the series together as "maybe good". There's what, 10 or 11 of them now? Some actually are on the "good" side of the equation. Others not so much.

If you have a modded firestick you can dial up just about any movie. I mod them for people I know. If you don't know how you can look up Troypoint and get the how to and the best apps.

Since the new season of Strike Back is out I've been rewatching the old seasons to kill some time and lead up to binge the new one.
Season 3 of Ozark just came out on Netflix.
High octane action.. watch The Raid Redemption.

With not being one for sitting still too long, I've been rewatching some 80's comedies. Been on a tear the last couple days with John Candy movies. Great Outdoors, Delirious, Harry Crumb.
Want a good laugh, rewatch Hot Shots. I swear Lloyd Bridges character is Joe Biden.

I fell out of gaming back around the PS2 days and got a Xbox over the holidays so I have the time and have been getting into some of the shooting games. World War Z is pretty fun. Call of Duty I haven't much played. Good game but don't have the time to master all the functions.

Other people I know have been watching the movie Contagion. Since it seems to mimic a lot of what is going on with this Covid19 crap. Good cast and story.
Escape Room is fun to watch. I haven't yet watch The Platform but it's on my list for tomorrow.

Since I'm not working my regular job I'm back to day trading. Gotta love the volatility.

Don't remember how new it is, but we just watched "The Art of Racing In the Rain". If you ever liked dogs you will get this movie, and unless you are a super hard case, your eyes will leak.
