    Its says "tried to break into a house" so does that mean this is a situation involving curtilage? Mr. Relford is always on about how that isn't clearly defined. Also, no mention of the intruder using deadly force so was the homeowner in fear for his life?

    Yes curtilage, it's the area that would normally be fenced in on your property and may include out buildings. And when a thief has decided to invade your home he's already past the decision to kill you to not get caught. When someone is forcibly trying to enter your home you must assume they are there to take your life and stuff. Treat them as such.
