My younger sister has spent most of her life in a nursing home due to life altering epileptic fits that are so bad she's tried to commit suicide on several occasions. On top of this she has tourette's syndrome that manifests itself with almost comical flailing and sometimes ill timed laughter. She's been seeing specialists for years and lately she's been showing signs of improvement to the point that she, her therapist, nurses, doctors and those of us nearest to her felt she was ready to start taking short trips out into the world.
This morning with the blessing of all I picked up my sister from the nursing home and drove around for awhile and you should have seen the joy in her face. We were fortunate in the fact that the sun was shining brightly and spring was making itself known thru the chirping birds and budding trees. I asked her if she minded if we made a quick stop to pick up a few things and she readily agreed on the condition that she join me in the store. After several minutes of her pleading I gave in as we pulled into Payless.
We ran into the store and literally picked up two things, honestly I was hesitant to spend too much time in the store with her as sensory overload has a nasty habit of manifesting itself in her by triggering an epileptic episode or an outburst of tourrettes. As is my luck when we approached the check out lines NONE of the self checks were open so we walked up behind a gentleman with about a half cart load of goods. My sister started asking what all the tape on the floor was and as I started explaining it to her she suffered an episode.
In trying to keep her from hurting herself or others she nudged the guy in front of us a couple of times but thankfully he moved to the front of the cart to give me some room to allow me to help my sister. At this point she almost fell into the guys cart and I apologized and asked him if I could go get him a loaf of bread to replace the one she had just crushed. At this point he said something about a mask and the blue line in a very vulgar way and to tell you the truth he came across as one of those that could pull a gun on you for this very type of slight that he had just been the victim of. Thank God he wasn't one of those gun worshiping idiots that seem to live for the opportunity to kill somebody because they "feared for their life"! This could have been a horrible ending to what had started out as such a promising day.
At this point one of the store employees showed mercy and motioned us over to a self check and opened it for us. I tell you, it's times like this that I really think about becoming one of those gun worshiping idiots so I can at least have equal footing should I ever run into this guy or one of his kin again.
I managed to get my sister calmed down enough that we could continue our drive and although she was putting on a brave face I could tell she had been visibly shaken by this mans actions.
Sorry for the long winded post but I just had to get this off my chest. Has anybody else experienced such an event recently, I almost pulled out my phone to take a picture of the guy but didn't think he would react as a sane person would given his early actions.
