Hello I am looking for a map either in paper or digital form that will show the 1,000 blocks of Indianapolis, ex: 7,300 Brookville Rd. As we know the circle is 0,0 but after that I am lost... Any help is appreciated on finding a solution. Trying to learn the 1,000 blocks of the city to be familiar. thank you!

Actually the circle isn't really 0,0. Washington and Meridian are 0,0. Going north, it's easy to figure out - 10th St. is 1000 north, 16th St. is 1600 north, etc.. All the other directions aren't so straight forward though.

I think once had that book you speak of, it had no maps, just every street in Indy and its corresponding 100 block number. For instance it would tell you Shadeland was 7000 east, so theoretically it was 7 miles east of Meridian. I think angling roads would show 1800-3200. In a pre GPS era it was a handy tool to get to the right area to then find the exact address once there. I thought it was called a street guide, but likely not printed anymore.

I still laugh about calling a place from a nearby gas station to get directions and being told I'll have to get someone to help you, I don't know how to tell you where I work...

The Thomas Guide was indispensable for living in Los Angeles when I first moved there in the pre-GPS era. Somewhat ironically the reason I went to LA was to work in the NAVSTAR GPS Joint Program Office. But I digress.

I never heard of them until I got to LA so don't know if there was an Indianapolis version, but there were versions for Texas when I got here in '98, even my rural county, but GPS devices have pretty much killed them off. You can still get an Los Angeles and Orange Counties version on Amazon, but alas no (Thomas Guide) Indy version.

I’ll have to dig through my old stuff to see if I have an old one. It doesn’t have every street and block, but it has the big ones.

If you’re doing what I think you’re doing, your best bet is to drive it (or better yet have a friend drive you) and draw a map with your observations. Landmarks will serve you tremendously.

Let me know if there’s a specific side of town you want to start with and I’ll throw out the big ones.

Oh man I’m rusty and tired. If I goof, it’s because I haven’t worked East in a couple of years. I’ll gladly accept corrections from the peanut gallery.

    East St - 500
    College Ave - 700
    Shelby St - 1100
    State Ave - 1700
    Keystone Ave - 2400
    Rural St - 2800

Should have followed the layout of Kenosha, WI. Numbered streets go East and West. Numbered Avenues go N and S.

So an address like 845 N 5th Avenue would be between 8th and 9th Streets on the west side of the road (odd on West, even on East).

    Very Germanic.

Looks like that would have what you want. :yesway:

The book I'm describing is pocket size. It is very cool to be able to plot your course in the city using street signs instead of a map and street names. For those that have not noticed, most Indy street signs have a number followed by a letter for N,S,E,W.

If I understand what you are describing, I hate it. It is a pain to keep 1st St W and 1st St N from getting confusing to people...
