If some folks are not aware - starting July 1st Indiana drivers may no longer hand hold their cell phone to talk or text. This will be a ticketable offense and next year it will add points on your DL. Claims are that texting is a huge distraction for drivers and is the leading cause of teenage driver accidents/fatalities. I won’t dispute the claim as it seems reasonable. Apparently if your vehicle is new enough to feature hands free talking you allowed to do that. I’ll need to figure out how to program the one of three vehicles I own that is new enough to have that feature.

I am wondering if law enforcement is going to adhere to this restriction ? I would wager historically when I see a police cruiser the officer is on their cell phone at least 50% of the time when driving. I have heard the excuse that talking on a cell phone for “official business” is less likely to be overheard than radio traffic and, therefore, more secure. Add in the potential concurrent use of the in-car computer during driving and law enforcement may well be at great or greater risk than most “civilians.”

There is a great video on YouTube that shows a patrolman asking a driver he has stopped for a traffic violation if he is a sovereign citizen. The driver replies that he is not, but believes police are/act like sovereign citizens since he has constantly observed individual officers breaking traffic laws without being cited. Interesting observation.

    Let’s be careful out there.
