unfortunately, without good moderation any public forum degrades into a flame war zone..

just as some posters on other pro gun sites get nasty, i have seen anti gun posters do the same on their sites, or on gun sites..

people use the apparent anonymity of the internet as a chance to forget their manners..

a while back there used to b a nice web site packing.org , untill the site owner choose to go to a no moderated sysgtem..
the spam and bad posters made it unusable ...

    From this thread: https://www.indianagunowners.com/fo...ent/9710-assault_rifles_should_be_banned.html

Immediately made me think of this:

I don't know about this. I do know that passion brings out the worst in some people. But assholes will be assholes any where you put them. Yes for some anonymity will give them courage they wouldn't normally have. Like the small dog barking and snarling, at the big dog, on a chain just out of his reach.
I try to be the same guy regardless of the venue. The discussions I have here are the same ones I have at work. I debate topics all the time on liberal blogs and I find when they can't answer questions, they resort to name calling and it pisses them off when I don't respond in kind. I try to always be the adult.
I think the thing about INGO for the most part is most of the members wish to meet other members and that helps keep things civil.

a few excerpts from jay and silent bob strike back....the last line really highlights it
from two different conversations in the movie (if anyone is offended by the swearing....sorry)

Holden: If the buzz is any indicator, that movie's gonna make some huge bank.
    Jay: What buzz?
    Holden: The Internet buzz.
Jay: What the **** is the Internet?
Holden: The Internet is a communication tool used the world over where people can come together to bitch about movies and share pornography with one another.

Banky: Stop the movie? What are you, crazy?
Jay: All these assholes on the internet are calling us names because of this stupid ****ing movie.
Banky: That's what the internet is for. Slandering others anonymously. Stopping the flick isn't gonna stop that.

I am a pretty easy going nonconfrontational kind of guy. I have run into several people over the years on forums that tried to be very intimidating and threatening. I feel very certain they would not have acted that way if we were eye to eye. I do think a lot of people seem to lose their mind when sitting on their computer. I also think though that a lot of conflict begins because things are taken wrong because it is easy to say something in jest (that everyone would have laughed at sitting around over a beer) but is taken as an insult.
