I'm sure at one point we've all been told to carry the same type of defensive ammo the local police carry, that way you won't have to defend your choice of round in the event of a self defense shooting.

I'm curious what brand(s) IMPD officers or State Troopers carry while on duty. Is it totally up to the department or are there options at all?

Do you carry the same round when off duty or do you have a personal preference that performs better?

Does IMPD use same round as Sheriff's Dept.?

I have lots of questions. Any and all officer input appreciated.

I'm also interested in what LEO use in their shotguns and AR-15s as well.

You don't want to use the AR rounds IMPD issues. Maybe the shotgun rounds. Last time I looked, which has been a while, the exact handgun rounds issued were hard to find off the shelf. But essentially what Frank said, Federal's tactical line is the source for IMPD's issued ammo.

Why not on the AR round

They pay, they pick. For IMPD, off duty ammo (for personally owned firearms, that you qual with as a backup) must be from an approved list if not in caliber .40

Does IMPD use same round as Sheriff's Dept.? Unknown/don't care. MCSO is far less uniform. I see a plethora of different sidearms hanging on "duty" belts for those guys. Mostly Glocks, from Gen 2 to current. A few old-timers with 1911s...yes, I'm serious....

I have lots of questions. Any and all officer input appreciated.

We use all Federal Tactical for handun, rifle, and shotgun. Not the Hydrashock for handgun, .40 cal.

If memory serves, I believe the current Fed Tactical handgun round is the HST. The Fed-tac "flite-control" shotgun rounds are freaking awesome. I haven't used the fed-tac 5.56 ammo but I believe it is a a bonded soft point. "Trophy Bonded Bearclaw" was what they used to call the projectile but I dunno if that is what they still load.

I am impressed with the 12 gauge round. I never knew I could hit a target from 50 yards with a shotgun with a 14-inch barrel.

I have been using the Flitecontrol rounds since before I got on with IMPD because I'm one of the  kids. Seriously though, I'm a big fan of those rounds and I was pleased as punch when I found that those are what they issued to me. I carry the Federal Tactical Bonded .40, which is what they issue, in my G22 and G27. Off duty, I carry Federal's HST 147gr 9mm in my M&P.

I got these from an INGO member. Do they look like this?

All I see are a bunch of words and symbols.
