Frequently when I run into a store to pick something up and this question runs into my mind. Say youre in a meijer and you hear what you believe to be gun fire on the opposite end of the store. What do you do? Do you pull out your carry weapon? Obviously if you are in eye sight of the shooter thats a no brainer. But what if you cant see them, and you just see people running? How do you go about not being looked at as a second threat? If the police are running in and you have your weapon in hand im not sure theres enough time to say youre a good guy before being riddled with bullets. How would you handle it?

Draw when you encounter the threat, otherwise everything else you mentioned comes into play. Get your gun out and you will be perceived as the threat.

Good question that I believe we should all consider when we carry. Actually makes me think maybe I need a little more training on situation response. Here are my thoughts. For mine it stays in the holster until I see the threat. I would approach the area of the threat cautiously. Then I must ask myself before I draw it ...

Is there a very immediate threat to myself or others? ... No threat, no draw.
Are they visibly being threatened with another weapon? ... Unless I believe there is a deadly weapon, I don't plan to draw.
Will drawing it cause more harm to innocent people? ... If there is a chance I will shoot others, best get a handle on the situation first.
Do I know who is innocent and who is the aggressor? ... Important to know.

Maybe our INGO LE officers can weigh in. I would like to hear ideas of others.

what if youre deep concealed, perhaps using a leg holster? not something you can whip out if you turn down an aisle and come face to face with the threat.

Hell of a time to learn that lesson huh? Sounds like you're already questioning that decision, which is a good start. :yesway:

That is why you only carry your BUG on the ankle. Your primary weapon needs to be reachable.

Gunshots going off, my gun is coming out, held close to not be obvious, but certainly in my hand...

But you have the benefit of training and that shiny badge, don't you?
Also maybe a bit more of an obligation to stop the threat than escape it?

I'd do the same even if I wasn't an officer. I'm not going to play the "quickdraw" game with anybody.

The person behind the firearms counter with the blue jacket and yellow walmart letters would probably have a better chance of surviving that. That is as long as they didn't have to call someone to get the keys for the ammo and a shotgun cases.
