I was hiking the Appalachian Trail this last June and I ALWAYS do 2 things! I never hike alone and I always carry a light weight .22 pocket pistol. Of course the gun won't help against the bear but it will allow me to run fast enough to catch up with my hiking partner and knee-cap them. This plan has never failed for me and I highly recommend it! PS Never talk about your plan with you hiking partner prior to the trip!

I have always heard you don't need to outrun a bear but only the guy you are with. I'm not a real fast runner but I think your pocket pistol method would guarantee my safety.
