A Virginia state senator this week began openly carrying a .38-caliber revolver strapped to her hip, calling it a “deterrent” against confrontational protesters and other potential threats.

Sen. Amanda Chase, a Republican freshman legislator, said she became concerned for her safety Monday after a group of immigration activists confronted her colleague, state Sen. Richard H. Black, over his bill to ban sanctuary cities.

The next day, Chase -- who claims she has long held a concealed carry permit -- was seen in the Virginia state Capitol in Richmond, visibly wearing a revolver.

Isn't Virginia where the Governor is about to introduce a semi-automatic gun ban proposal that will essentially make all modern rifles and pistols illegal?

Can we peasants carry in the state capital in Virginia?
Based upon a quick review you can carry in the Virginia Capital Building including the House Chambers however not in the Senate Chambers or all executive branch offices.

Virginia: Possession of a firearm is allowable to three groups. Those being General Assembly Members, Law Enforcement and anyone who has a valid concealed handgun permit. Firearms can be carried open or concealed. The Senate has banned firearms from being carried in the public gallery overlooking the Senate Floor. The House does not have that restriction for their gallery. This Capitol does have metal detectors

Executive Order 50 (2015) directed the Department of General Services to prohibit the open or concealed carry of firearms in all executive branch offices.[/FONT]

I like her statement. Really hope she knows how to use it.

    therein lies the potential problem

I support carrying. Telling everyone you're carrying to "send a message" to protesters is dumb. You should carry all the time, in case any threat happens, not because you're gonna bust a cap in the next protester that gets in your way.

The line about the other Democratic rep saying "just call the capitol police" was funny as hell, though. Couldn't invent a more stereotyped response.

She could continue to do us all a service and keep her name in the news if she'd publicly document her training journey.

Doesn't everybody's phone work like alladin's lamp, where you massage a couple keys and judge judy and the SWAT team materialize? I wonder if the capitol police respond to restaurants etc too?

The "carry as a deterrent to protesters" idea is bogus and harmful - it promotes the "crazy gun owner" stereotype. Not sure about the laws of every state, but stating that you're displaying a firearm to intimidate others is probably, well, intimidation in a lot of places. And it could quite possibly incite someone into trying to bait her into making good on her words (or eating them), a situation in which there would be no winner.

How about just carry, STFU, and deploy if threatened with serious bodily injury?

It is not "carrying to intimidate".
Refusing to be intimidated is not intimidating.
