Just wondering what a LEO would think about someone carrying a pistol in a holster, not on their belt but in their hand. Would that be acceptable as open carry or breaking the law? I see people enter the range on a regular basis carrying a pistol in their hand in a holster and I wonder at what point it goes from open carry to brandishing?

There is no "brandishing law" in Indiana.
Pointing a gun at people is what's illegal, unless it's a self defense situation.

    1. Do not care what LEO thinks.

    2. Indiana does not specify how a handgun is to be carried. Carry it in your hand just don't point it at anyone.

    3. Indiana does not care about open, concealed, in a boat with a goat, duct taped to forehead, just carry.

    4. What pudknockers do on the range is up to that pudknocker. They should buy range bags and get squared away, but that is humanity, what can you do?

But... but... a confused cop is an arresty cop. ;)
A cops ignorance is not your concern, If they do not know the laws and make an unlawful decision, get them fired, file a lawsuit, either way their ignorance should never keep you from exercising your rights.

Go ahead and walk around downtown with your handgun in your hand. Perfectly legal, assuming you don't point it at anyone and you hold a LTCH. You're going to get a lot of unwanted attention.

Just because it is legal doesn't mean it is smart. Or advisable.

Advocating positions like this is what empowers the anti gunners.

Okay, but we wouldn't hire a guy to roof my house that doesn't know roofs, why hire a cop that does not know the law...seems like there would be qualified candidates that actually know the laws..if your not knowledgeable on the laws..how can you expect to enforce them.. I would not go apply at N.A.S.A, I know I am not the right guy for that job

We are spoiled here in FW, the cops are pretty cool and the dept has sent out memos about OC.

    SB, however... https://www.indianagunowners.com/forums/carry-issues-self-defense/169733-1-sbpd-officer-maxey.html

Unless you and your goat are in a riverboat casino. :)

    In the country, hopefully.

Why hire a cop that doesn’t know the law? I dunno, but it sure happens.
You might hire a guy that you think knows roofs but turns out he doesn’t, it’s just not that cut and dry.

While 100% correct, one needs to observe common sense. So in that regard, you should care what a LEO thinks. In instances, outside the range, I can totally see Terry V Ohio being used for the justification to stop, disarm, and identify a person who is walking around with a holstered gun in their hand.

Yes it should be that cut and dry because roofers don’t put you in hand cuffs and take you to jail.

I have to concur with Kut here. Although Pinner limits when an officer can inquire about an individual's permit, carrying a firearm IN YOUR HAND is factually different from Pinner and I, too, can totally see it justifying a brief stop.
